Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Brigmon
Hi Timothy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We come from a background of farmers so growing vegetables, and raising livestock came naturally to us. We started a small garden in Charleston
when we noticed some health-related concerns with our daughter. At the early age of 7 in
second grade our daughter complained about having headaches and we noticed her body
was maturing very early for her age. She was in the care of an Endocrinologist and tests
and an MRI confirmed that she had the bones of a 13 yr old girl and her Pituitary Gland
was releasing hormones early for puberty. She was diagnosed with Precocious Puberty. Our
daughter was treated with Lupron Depot 30 mg injections every 3 months to stop her
body from developing until she reached the age 13 which was the age her body was
currently. We were very concerned that the commercial milk and meats we purchased at our
local grocery stores may have played a role and decided to grow our own vegetables to
prepare our home meals and decline the purchasing of store-bought meats by raising our own.
When we started in our backyard, living in Charleston I planted vegetables from gourds to
herbs like rosemary. We decided we needed more growing space and we
purchased a home in Colleton County, a rural area. We live on an acre lot and make
good use of our space. We now have a sizable garden in which I began to grow beans,
gourds, okra, sweet potatoes, peppers, corn, and sunflowers. Quickly I began to
fill different areas with fruit trees, grapes along with Yellow and Confederate Jasmines to
attract bees. We have wild blueberries that grow along the woodside and planted
Blackberries and Elderberry trees to make Elderberry Syrups. Last we purchased egg
layers, poultry for meat and Berkshire Pigs. We now incubate and hatch our own chickens, soon to develop and produce our own poultry for meat.
We partner with our church to provide meat for community outreach and Fresh Future
Farm. We participate at local Farmer Markets providing chemical and antibiotic free
vegetables, eggs and hormone free meat along with value added products like our Gourmet quiches to consumers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some parts of our journey has been smooth, but others have been a little bumpy. Our biggest obstacle has been funding the projects that we do. Running a farm has been an very expensive, and time consuming process. To offset most of what we do we started participating in our local farmers markets selling our value added products that range from fresh fruit pies, fresh hand churned butters ,and gourmet quiches. We also process and sell our heritage meat birds, eggs ,and in the fall our premium Berkshire pork.
We’ve been impressed with Brigmon Farms LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Brigmon Farms LLC is a Minority Women owned and operated farm providing Heirloom vegetables, pesticide free and chemical free fruits. We humanely raise Freedom Rangers poultry that pasture and mature naturally in 14 weeks to process in a humane way serving our communities a better quality and leaner meat. we incubate and hatch our own heritage breed of egg layers sharing the beauty of variety of colored eggs our chickens can produce other than the normal brown and white eggs you see at your local grocery markets. we also provide a space for those who are interested in homesteading come and tour our farm as well as educating them about the process of poultry farming from incubation to hatching and care of the bird’s sanitation and housing. We use our farm fresh eggs to produce our Gourmet Quiches in the variety of flavors Blue Crab with Applewood Bacon and Tomato & Basil being our top sellers. Our determination is to provide the best quality over quantity that is what sets us apart. we limit ourselves on how many poultry we raise and process at a single time to keep from overcrowding and ensuring the health of our birds. Our highest priority is choosing a breed that naturally is allowed to mature 14 weeks to maturity over choosing a Cornish Cross breed that can easily mature 6 to 7 weeks that is susceptible to major health issues. We are most proud of the overwhelming demand for our Gourmet Quiches and Poultry. We are participants at local farmer markets in the Charleston and surrounding area. You can purchase our products on our website at BRIGMONFARMSLLC.COM we offer shipping and delivery or shop at our onsite farmstand.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid-19 has taught us the importance of having some knowledge in growing and producing food through crisis and food scarcity times and how to be self-sufficient feeling empowered
