Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Palmer
Hi Steve, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Atlanta. After losing my dad and grandfather within months of each other as a teenager, I found myself homeless at age 13 and addicted to drugs and alcohol shortly after. I made my way to Charleston, where I worked different positions in various restaurants, but I was still struggling with addiction. One day, my boss at the time gave me an ultimatum: Get help or get fired. I chose to get help. Since then, I have been able to give back to the industry that has given me so much through founding the Indigo Road Hospitality Group and co-founding Ben’s Friends, a support group for members of the food and beverage industry named in memory of Ben Murray, a chef who took his own life in 2016 after struggling with alcoholism.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an entrepreneur has been about taking risks, and I’ve learned a lot more from my failures than I have from my successes. Through hard times, however, I’ve been able to connect more deeply with my team, double down on our values, and strengthen our culture.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Indigo Road Hospitality Group?
Indigo Road Hospitality Group owns, operates, and manages restaurants and boutique hotels throughout the country. Based in Charleston, we are founded upon the core principle of serving with love and creating memorable experiences for all. Today, we have a portfolio of more than 30 restaurants and independent hotels. We believe great service starts with well-cared-for employees, and I attribute the company’s success to our loyal and dedicated team.
What sets us apart is our culture and the hospitality we show towards each other. I am proudest when I see our employees enjoying their jobs and experiencing a rewarding career in hospitality.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
