Inspiring Conversations with Shanequa Joe of Nextdoor Realty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanequa Joe.

Hi Shanequa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Tiny Steps Foundation started after we became aware that many parents even those above the poverty level still struggle to afford basic necessities. The truth is, a lot of families simply have more month than money. I learned this through serving on community boards and through real conversations with caregivers who were doing everything right and still falling short.
Those conversations opened our eyes to how invisible diapers are within the cycle of poverty. They’re essential, expensive, and overlooked, yet without them, childcare and basic care can quickly be disrupted. We spent time listening, and instead of staying in the conversation stage, we chose to act. That’s how Tiny Steps moved from talkers to doers.
We take a bottom-up approach because we believe real change starts at the foundation. We’re also very intentional about how we show up. We understand that pride can keep people from asking for help, and we never want shame or fear to be a barrier. Everyone you encounter at Tiny Steps wants to be here. We share a common goal, we’re happy to serve, and we see this work as a social responsibility.
Today, Tiny Steps Foundation is a reliable source of diapers and diapering supplies across the Pee Dee region, helping ensure care is not interrupted and families can keep moving forward because not having a clean diaper really stinks!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a smooth road, with some challenges. On one hand, we’re proud to be the first no-barrier diaper pantry in the Pee Dee area and a reliable source of diapering supplies. We’re here for everyone no matter how small or large the situation. Some families only need support until payday, while others rely on us more consistently. As situations stabilize, many of those same families come back and give to the organization in meaningful ways, which speaks to the community we’ve built.
On the other hand, being the only pantry in the area that serves as a consistent, reliable source means a lot of people depend on us. The need is real and ongoing, and at times funding doesn’t fully match the demand. That’s where community support becomes essential.
Every resource entrusted to us is stewarded intentionally to create the greatest possible impact. This is good ground. What’s sown here goes far. We’re grateful that time and time again, provision has met the vision.

As you know, we’re big fans of Nextdoor Realty . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am the Broker-in-Charge and owner of Nextdoor Realty, where I lead with the belief that real estate, at its core, is about service, trust, and caring for people during some of the most important transitions of their lives.
I specialize in residential real estate and am deeply client-centered. I meet people where they are and advocate for their needs. What sets me apart is that I’ve never felt the need to compromise my passion for service in order to build a successful professional career. Service isn’t separate from my work it’s the foundation of it.
My work in real estate and my nonprofit leadership go hand in hand. Both are rooted in people, community, and stability. Helping a family secure housing and helping a family access basic necessities come from the same place: a genuine commitment to seeing people thrive.
That approach is encouraged and celebrated within my industry. In 2025, I was honored to receive the Good Neighbor Award from the Pee Dee Realtors Association, recognizing realtors who go above and beyond in community service. That recognition affirmed that leading with heart and purpose is not only possible it’s powerful.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that both Nextdoor Realty and my nonprofit work are known for trust, consistency, and impact.
Whether I’m serving clients, mentoring others, or supporting families through Tiny Steps Foundation, my goal remains the same: to show up fully, lead with integrity, and make a meaningful difference. My brand isn’t about transactions or titles it’s about people, service, and building stronger communities from the bottom up.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t see my journey as being driven by luck as much as it’s been shaped by preparation and resilience. From the outside looking in, there may have been moments that looked like good luck (opportunities, recognition, doors opening) but those moments were built on years of showing up, doing the work, and staying committed to people and community, even when it was hard.
If anything, the challenges and setbacks played a bigger role in shaping me as a leader. The moments that didn’t go as planned pushed me to adapt, advocate harder, and lead with empathy. They strengthened my ability to problem-solve, stay grounded, and keep moving forward even when outcomes weren’t guaranteed.
What I’ve learned is that opportunity tends to meet you when you’re already in motion. I’m grateful for every opportunity that’s come my way, but I’m most proud of the consistency, values, and service that positioned me to recognize and steward those opportunities when they appeared.
