Inspiring Conversations with Mindy Richardson of Passport To Postcards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Richardson.

Mindy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My path to becoming a travel advisor and founding Passport To Postcards wasn’t exactly linear, but in hindsight, it makes perfect sense. As a second-generation French American, my passion for travel was ignited on a trip to Paris at age 10 to visit my family, and it’s been a defining part of my life ever since. That experience stayed with me and quietly shaped how I saw the world; travel wasn’t just about going somewhere new, it was about connection and culture. Professionally, I spent over two decades in the insurance industry, working in leadership, training, and operations, and eventually rose to an executive role. I became very skilled at managing complex logistics, building processes, uncovering inefficiencies, and creating seamless experiences behind the scenes. But over time, I realized I wanted to build something that felt more personal and more aligned with what I loved.

Like many of my clients, I used to plan all of my own trips. I was good at it, and I genuinely enjoyed it, but I also saw firsthand how time-consuming and overwhelming it could become. I combined my operational expertise with my passion for travel to create a service that goes far beyond booking hotels and flights. Today, I specialize in designing highly personalized, seamless journeys, particularly throughout Europe and Canada, for families and couples who want meaningful, well-paced travel without the stress of figuring it all out on their own. I don’t just plan trips, I design experiences that allow my clients to be fully present in them.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and honestly, I don’t think the meaningful paths ever are. One of the biggest challenges was walking away from a long, established career where I had deep expertise and stability, into something completely self-built and feeling like a novice. In the corporate world, there’s structure, clear benchmarks, and a defined path forward. Entrepreneurship is the opposite; you’re building the path as you walk it, and that can feel both liberating and incredibly uncertain at the same time.

There was also a steep learning curve in the early days of the travel industry itself. Even with my background in operations and logistics, this is a relationship-driven business with a lot happening behind the scenes – supplier partnerships, constantly shifting travel conditions, and understanding how to truly advocate for clients when things don’t go as planned.

And then there’s the reality of building something from scratch, figuring out how to clearly communicate my value, finding the right clients, and setting boundaries around my time and expertise. That piece, in particular, took some trial and error. When you care deeply about what you do, it’s easy to overextend yourself at first.

But each of those challenges helped shape how I run Passport To Postcards today. They pushed me to be more intentional, more refined in my process, and more confident in the value I bring. So while it hasn’t been smooth, it’s absolutely been worth it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At its core, my business is about designing travel in a way that feels effortless and personal. I think of myself as a travel experience designer, which means I go far beyond booking hotels and flights. Every trip is thoughtfully designed around how they want to experience a destination, not just where they want to go. That includes everything from pacing and flow, to immersive local experiences to ensuring the logistics are frictionless from start to finish.

What I’m known for, and what truly sets me apart, is the level of personalization and care I bring to each itinerary. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all travel. I take the time to understand my clients’ travel style, their priorities, and even the small details that elevate a trip from “good” to unforgettable. My personal travel experiences and my background in operations play a big role here; I naturally think several steps ahead, anticipate potential issues, and design trips that feel smooth and intuitive while my clients are experiencing them.

I also place a strong emphasis on being a true partner throughout the entire process. From the initial planning stages to real-time support while they’re traveling, my clients know they have someone in their corner. That peace of mind is a big part of the value I provide, especially when unexpected situations come up.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that I’ve built something that feels both elevated and approachable. I want my clients to feel taken care of, not overwhelmed or intimidated. My business is rooted in trust, attention to detail, and a genuine love for creating experiences that bring people closer to each other and to the places they’re exploring.

What I want readers to know is this: working with me isn’t about handing over control of your trip; it’s about enhancing it. I bring expertise, insight, and thoughtful design so that you can be fully present in the experience itself. That’s where the real magic of travel happens.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My husband has been one of my biggest supporters from the very beginning. As an entrepreneur himself, he understood both the risks and the rewards of stepping away from a traditional career and building something from the ground up. His encouragement gave me the confidence to take that leap into business ownership, and his perspective has been invaluable along the way.

I’ve also had incredible support from my host agency, KHM Travel Group. They played an integral role in helping me get started by providing the foundational training, tools, and industry knowledge I needed in those early stages. Having that kind of structure and guidance made a huge difference as I was finding my footing.

And of course, my clients deserve a tremendous amount of credit as well. They’ve trusted me with their time, their investment, and some of their most meaningful experiences. That trust is not something I take lightly, and it’s been a driving force in how I’ve grown and refined my business.
