Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Cannon
Hi Mike, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started with a lawn mower trailer and my moms 2002 Ford Explorer delivering furniture around town. I was working two other jobs for the first year, late-night bartending and early morning fitness coaching. As my name got around, I eventually used U-Hauls to do smaller apartment moves, continuing to scale up my services into larger moves as I developed more experience. This process never stopped, and now we do multi-truck moves across the nation with an unparalleled level of services in the upstate.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I had no background in business and no substantial help along the way. I learned most lessons the hard way, as I always have. I was committed to never forcing a customer to take the fall for mistakes I made, so if I priced or organized a move wrong, I made up for it by eating the loss or refunding the customer. This happened plenty of times. It took me a long time to learn how to estimate the time it would take to do a move. Combining that with my desire to secure every move someone called about, I often times wound up underestimating the scope of the work in order to book, and consequently forcing myself to work extremely long hours, cutting deeply into small profit margins. It also took me a long time to find a solid crew, as the moving industry tends to attract low quality applicants who apply because they believe moving companies will hire anybody. Dealing with the stress of unreliable movers and my own shortcomings made the first 3 years brutal. Despite this, I never lost my commitment to quality and managed to pull of great services time and time again. I would do whatever it took to make sure our customers were left feeling satisfied, a standard I still hold today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mike’s Movers?
We are a “fine dining” moving company, focusing on not only the move, but the full customer experience. We are small and veteran owned. We specialize in full-scale, high end moves, and we are known for friendliness, speed, precision, communication, and community involvement. Our crew sets us apart, as we are extremely picky with who we hire. Our first company value is “Mindset”- you cannot be hired at Mike’s Movers without the proper attitude and perspective, regardless of experience or skill sets. As the owner, I prioritize consistent flow of values and standards from my vision of the company to the jobsite. I do not expect any less than the best each of my crew can deliver, every day. This is why they are paid the best in the industry! With Mike’s Movers, you can expect a heavy personal touch, clean, professional, and friendly movers who work efficiently without stopping, and integrity and accountability should a mistake be made- we never leave a customer feeling taken advantage of.
I am most proud of our dedication to our movers. I mentor my guys, and have seen them grow and mature over the years into high-quality young men, with much promise and potential still.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Purpose in what we do. I personally cannot do this work if it is meaningless. This has led to my seeking reason and meaning in my work before profit, by connecting to my community and understanding that I am an important part of what makes our town great. By doing a good job, I can ensure I am carrying my weight and fulfilling my duty to the world around me, to simply be and do my best at what I’m called to do.
