Today we’d like to introduce you to Ling Chen.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started photography after having my first child. At the time, I just wanted to take better photos of my own kid, so I picked up a camera and began learning little by little. What started as taking portraits of my children and family slowly grew into photographing clients, and eventually turned into something I truly love doing.
Over the years, I’ve photographed many types of sessions, including families, kids, maternity and newborns. There’s something really special about capturing the small moments: a newborn’s tiny foot, the way a toddler laughs, how siblings interact, or how a family naturally fits together when they’re just being themselves. Those moments feel real and meaningful to me, and that’s what keeps me going. It’s always the best feeling to see the photos I took hanging on my clients’ walls.
This journey has been very organic, nothing overnight. And I’m really grateful to have found something I truly love — something that has grown into work I genuinely enjoy every single day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing about this journey has been easy. In the beginning, I was learning photography while taking care of a baby at the same time. The only time I could study was at night after the baby went to sleep, so I spent a lot of late nights trying to figure out my camera, learning editing and practicing whenever I could. Looking back, I’m grateful for that period because it really shaped who I am as a photographer.
And of course, shooting itself isn’t always smooth either. Sometimes kids don’t want to cooperate, sometimes the weather makes things tricky, and sometimes the photos just don’t turn out the way I hoped. Even now, I know most clients come to me because they like my style, but if I’m not satisfied with the images, I still go through moments of self-doubt.
But every challenge has pushed me to grow, and that has become a big part of why I love what I do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Momentsin Photography?
My business is called Momentsin Photography. I focus on lifestyle family sessions, newborns and maternity. Most of my sessions are outdoors or in clients’ homes because people feel more relaxed and natural in those environments.
My style is warm, simple and natural. My photos are full of light and real moments. I don’t force kids to smile. I prefer to capture the way families truly interact and the small moments that show their connection. My colors are true to life because I want the photos to feel timeless.
What I am most proud of is that families often tell me they can feel the warmth and connection in my images. My goal is to create photos that feel real, honest and meaningful for each family.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Honestly, YouTube has been my best teacher. I learned so much just by watching tutorials and behind-the-scenes videos. Once you get into this field, you naturally start meeting more talented photographers and people doing amazing work. Networking kind of happens on its own if you’re active.
