Inspiring Conversations with Kevin Cabe of Mission City Travel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Cabe.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Mission City Travel (MCT) began ten years (2015) ago in New York City. Mission City Travel began as a means to assist churches from across the U.S. to partner with local churches in New York City. Our owner, Kevin Cabe was serving with the Metropolitan New York Baptist Association as their partnership coordinator recruiting churches from across the country to serve. MCT initially helped with group airfare and hotel reservations in the early days and has grown from there.

This initially began as a side hustle but quickly grew into a thriving small business.

Today, Mission City Travel has over 20 travel advisors working from seven states. In 2021 MCT began operating motor coach trips serving groups from Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, and more. We work with local schools, HOA communities, churches, and more.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle for us was in 2020 when the pandemic hit. Over night all of our trips were gone and so was our revenue and income. We refunded every dollar that came to us. Luckily for us, we had no employees at the time and didn’t have to lay anyone off. We almost closed our doors during that time. In 2021, we helped a few people and then in 2022 things opened back up and we haven’t slowed down since.

Our growth since then has increased by 100% and we’re grateful for what we have done and what’s ahead.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our vision is to inspire life-changing experiences through meaningful travel that connects, educates, and empowers the next generation. At Mission City Travel, we are committed to designing exceptional group & family travel experiences that combine performance, education, service and rest. We partner with schools, churches, organizations & families to provide stress-free, purpose-driven trips that broaden horizons, build community, and create unforgettable memories.

We serve our clients in four ways: vacations (families), group airfare, group trips (Motorcoach), and short-term mission opportunities.

We’re passionate about serving people and crafting great adventures no matter your travel style.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My wife is my biggest supporter and has allowed me to dream big during this process. While serving in New York City, I was able to network with people, churches, and organizations across the country. Many use our services today. Those relationships have become friendships as well.

There have been several other travel advisors along the way that have been a resource whether in destinations or being available to help think through business process to streamline our results.

Melinda Strickland has been an incredible friend and resource to our company. Not only does she work with us, she has been mentoring me and others in our organization. Her wealth of knowledge has been invaluable.

Another opportunity I had was to partner with SCORE through the Small Business Administration and have a mentor that helped me strategize the next phase in our growth.
