Inspiring Conversations with Dylan Hazelwood of Hazelwood Mechanical Solutions LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Hazelwood.

Hi Dylan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a 33 year old man from Charleston, I’ve been taking things apart to figure out how they worked since I was five years old. My dad was an HVAC technician, I grew up going with him on side jobs. After I turned 18 I worked as a commercial HVAC technician for other companies for over a decade and all the companies I worked for had the same problems and I always heard the same complaints from customers, mainly that every time they called they got a different technician who had a different diagnosis. So I decided to start a company to solve this problem and last year I founded Hazelwood Mechanical Solutions where every customer gets assigned a technician who handles all their HVAC service and maintenance. If I can get the company really rolling this summer I have high hopes we’ll eventually change the industry for the better.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. My family is broke and I’m neurodivergent. Despite always being in the top 3 technicians at any company I worked at according to their internal statistics, I’ve been fired before literally for “not being a good fit” after telling a customer the truth. That was when I decided to start Hazelwood Mechanical Solutions and build something better. Until I married my wife almost 2 years ago I didn’t think smooth was an option.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We do commercial HVAC/R service in the Charleston, SC area and we use a unique dedicated technician model where every customer is assigned a technician and gets their direct phone number. No dispatch boards, calling the office, etc, just talking directly to the individual who knows and works on your equipment.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My parents took me camping over a weekend when I was 11 years old and I out-fished my dad for the first time.
