Hidden Gems: Meet Theresa Covatto of Theresa Covatto Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Covatto.

Hi Theresa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always loved art and making and creating different things. Ever since I was little kid, when asked what I want to be when I grew up I would say artist. I knew then that the art world would be an important aspect of my life. I took my first photography class as a senior in High School and fell in love with the craft. I would always spend my lunch and free periods in the art room and make more art. In college I majored in Visual Arts and New Media with a concentration in Photography. With having a degree in the craft I was really able to develop and tune into my own style of photography. I decided I was going to emerge from school as a professional photographer and start my own business specializing in Wedding and Event photography.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been an easy journey. Some of the struggles I’ve faced have included inconsistent income, unrealistic client expectations and costly equipment. In the Wedding Industry there is a busy period and a slow period. Being able to find a balance and change and adapt what kind of photography sessions I offer based on the time of year has been something I have learned along the way. With client expectations, some people think that its a simple click of the camera and you’re done. When in reality, the behind the scene is a well structured machine. It is knowing your clients personality and having that shine through the photos, its staying on top of time management and family members you need to get photos of, anticipating moments before they happen, and then editing the photos in a timely manner. Lastly the equipment. It doesn’t end at owning a camera. There are different lens for different situations, obtaining a business license and insurance as well as a website and editing software.

We’ve been impressed with Theresa Covatto Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Wedding and Event photography. I’m known for capturing moments that the bride and groom didn’t know where even happening until they received their photo gallery. Something that sets me apart from other photographers is my motivation to be a step ahead of my competition. I’m most proud of my relationships with my clients. I love staying in touch with them and being able to photograph them again for a different life milestone. I want your readers to know that I offer all types of photography sessions not solely Wedding. If there is new born baby, first communion, family session, engagemet or headshots, I am able to take these types of photo sessions as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve always said that everything happens for a reason and we might not know the reason until after the moment has happened. So maybe I didn’t book a client that I wanted, but I was able to book a different one and some of my favorite photos were from the unexpected booking. Or perhaps I was able to make a connection at a coffee shop and book an Engagement and Wedding. Being in the right place at the right time is key.
