Hi Neha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a trained dentist from India. I came to New Jersey, United States in 2006 along with my husband who works in IT with a dream to become a dental professional in United States. The struggle started when I realized that being an immigrant and on dependent visa, it’s not that straight forward to get a license to practice.
I wrote National Boards exam to secure my seat with Virgina commonwealth university in the advanced placement program for internationally trained dentists.
We moved to Fort Mill after completing my graduation and got my license to practice in the state of SC and NC. I started as an associate with Family Dental in Rock Hill.
I was always motivated to start my own practice as that provides me with flexibility and opportunity to not run after corporate goals and focus on my passion, which is Dentistry.
After becoming a legal permanent resident in 2022, I decided to pursue my dream of opening and managing my own dental practice and I am proud that we started Arden Mill Family Dentistry in 2023 with the motive; “Your Smile Our Pride”. It’s been 2 + years and I feel fortunate for the love and support I have received from my patients. and my team. The wonderful reviews my patients post for our team makes all the hard work so much more rewarding.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an immigration the challenges were
1) To secure admission with an accredited college and pursue my license.
2) Pay for the college 🙂 Being an immigration, I am not eligible to apply for FAFSA. Had to secure private loans to pay for college
3) Long road to secure Permanent resident status. It took almost 20 years to get our permanent residency even after being tax paying, law abiding citizens in the country.
