Hidden Gems: Meet Michelle Pratt of The Pretty Parlor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Pratt.

Hi Michelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started cosmetology school right out of high school in 2010. I attended Charleston Cosmetology Institute and graduated in August 2011. I worked in a salon after that for a couple years, then worked Corporate America for about 6 years. I decided at the end of 2019 that I was tired of working corporate and wanted to get back to my passion of beauty. I was nervous because I knew I had to step out on faith. With the support from my husband, I made the decision to quit my full-time job and open my first salon during the pandemic in May 2020- The Pretty Parlor was born.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, I wouldn’t say struggles. Did everything go perfect- NOPE. Do I regret my decision-NOPE. Honestly, it’s the best decision I ever made for my career. My business continues to flourish just like what I prayed for.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Pretty Parlor?
The Pretty Parlor is a beauty bar where I specialize in natural hair care, healthy hair care, silk presses, blowouts, natural styling, and eye lashes. I’m most proud of how I established a great clientele (also accepting new clients) by word of mouth. 85% of my clients are word of mouth. I make it my duty to create a welcoming, and relaxing salon for my clients. I am very professional when it comes to interacting with my clients. I am very passionate about my craft.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years I see the industry creating more new trends, styles, etc. I see the beauty industry creating more schools, hands-on classes, beauty events preferably more in the Charleston and surrounding areas.
