Hidden Gems: Meet Mia Gentry of The name of my business is Growing Minds Learning Center LLC.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Gentry.

Mia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey begin in a small cubicle at a pharmacy. One day as I sat at my desk I heard the Holy Spirt say there is something else for you. So one day in prayer I heard you will work for me. You will see.
After wrestling with that I finally had clarity concerning what I was supposed to do. God instructed me to open a Childcare center in my home. So that’s exactly what I did. I operated that Childcare Center for two years. There was so many people trying to get in that I had to find a building..

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Tthis is not been a smooth road in anyway. At the beginning of my journey as a provider there was so many things that I did not know about Early Care education.. being a novice and having no resources or connections, the first four or five years were somewhat difficult. I racked up quite a few violations in the beginning just trying to figure things out. I was often discouraged by this because I was told what I was doing wrong but was given any advice or strategies on how to do it right. I’ve also had some struggles with finding the right teachers to bring into my facility because everyone doesn’t see the same necessity for having a culture of kindness as I do. There are many individuals whose always been taught to talk at children not two children, and they don’t understand the difference between the two finding educators who truly get it has been hard.

As you know, we’re big fans of The name of my business is Growing Minds Learning Center LLC. . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

We partner with Quality Counts, ABC Quality as well as South Carolina infant mental health association, and South Carolina First Steps 4K.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
My childhood was interesting. Part of that time I lived with my grandparents. Other times I live with my mother. I was flown back-and-forth from California to South Carolina and even Arizona as a child so life for me never was stable. I had two brothers who also were never very stable. But I enjoyed my my childhood. I did not understand what I did didn’t have. How could I miss it. I only embraced and enjoyed what I did.
As a child, I knew that I loved God and I wanted to serve him. I loved to look up in the sky and watch the clouds move. I enjoyed lots of solitude. I spent most of my time entertaining myself. I remember making doll houses with paper bags and singing songs to myself and pretending I was married to Michael Jackson..
