Today we’d like to introduce you to Maryann Ewing.
Hi Maryann, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My father would allow me to be an interior designer if I had a college degree and I made sure my clients did not get surprise invoices. He was very frustrated with my mother’s interior Designer Virginia Lewis and her lack of accounting skills. I passed all of the exams and received extra schooling in Denmark.
After that I worked for commercial interior design company , high-end residential company and then two architectural firms. Then a move to Santa Barbara from the Bay Area and started my own company.

My speciality is space planning and integrating a space to the surrounding so that there is a sense of place. I have been creating environmentally friendly spaces for over 25 years. I integrated Biophilia into my design principles 12 years ago. Environmental psychology has been an integral part of my designs from the beginning of my career. Once a year I am a guest speaker in an environmental psychology class at the College of Charleston.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The interior design business is not a smooth road. It is a very difficult business. It is a business of details. It takes a lot to create a design, sell your idea and then execute the build and furnishing of the space.
The economy creates and wax and wane to the interior design business. Being in the Build Business interior designers are the first people to start seeing the market slow down. Interior Design should be the Bellwether for the economy. Myself and colleagues started feeling the current market slow down in January.
We’ve been impressed with Beech Hill Studios, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Beech Hill Studios, LLC is a full service award winning interior design company. Our experience includes high end residential and commercial.
Design is a process. We understand the process and document projects well. This allows us to keep projects running in a timely fashion and allows us to work on projects Nationally and internationally.
Our designs seem to last 20+ years before people decide to renovate.
Which is a compliment to our being able to see into the future and create spaces that have a “sense of place “
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Listening, listening and listening to the client, understanding the budget., and the goal of the client.
Creating a sense of place with a project. Giving the Client more than just an interior that is on trend. But instead a space that is customized to them and feels good to be in. It could be adding a window to capture a view, it could be opening up a closet to create an exit outside that now becomes a patio, it could be a change in color. Being appropriate to the architecture, budget, time, function and the clients needs is the key to our professional interior design services.
