Today we’d like to introduce you to Malika Eberhardt
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Malika Eberhardt, and I’m from Norfolk, VA. Since the age of three, dance has been my passion. I danced anywhere and everywhere I was allowed—street battles, dance teams, recreational programs, middle and high school cheer and dance teams—you name it, I did it. But beyond my personal love for dance, I always dreamed of something bigger. I wanted to create a space where young girls, especially those from backgrounds like mine, could find purpose, mentorship, and a positive outlet through dance.
At just 18, almost 19 years old, I took a leap of faith and founded Pink Pearls Dance Company—without guidance, knowledge, or even a blueprint to follow. Where I come from, chasing dreams wasn’t something you saw often. Success felt like something distant, something you could only achieve while sleeping. I had to want it all on my own, and I knew I needed to be the change I wished to see.
The turning point in my life came in July 2015 when my brother was tragically murdered. He was set up by someone he trusted—someone who, like so many young girls, lacked proper guidance and direction. Instead of allowing my grief and pain to consume me, I turned it into my purpose. That loss became the push I needed to start Pink Pearls with a mission: to save as many young ladies as possible from the streets, to give them the mentorship, structure, and opportunities that could change their lives. I often think that if the young woman involved in my brother’s death had the right guidance, things might have turned out differently.
Since then, Pink Pearls has grown into something bigger than I ever imagined. It has made a profound impact on our community and on countless kids and adults nationwide. One of our proudest moments came on December 2, 2023, when Pink Pearls made history by becoming the first Majorette dance company to win the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, ranking #1 in the country out of 200+ teams.
Our journey is far from over. August 10, 2025, will mark 10 years of Pink Pearls, and we are still striving for more, pushing boundaries, and changing lives. There’s so much more to our story, and we can’t wait to continue sharing our journey and inspiring the next generation.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not always been smooth. Like any journey worth taking, there have been challenges along the way that tested my resilience and determination.
One of the biggest struggles came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before COVID, we had 97 students enrolled, but after businesses were allowed to reopen, only 12 dancers returned. It was a major loss, not just financially but also emotionally. I was so close to closing our doors, but I knew I couldn’t give up on the vision and the impact Pink Pearls had on the community. We pushed forward, rebuilding little by little, determined to bring back what we had worked so hard for.
Just as we were getting steady again, another major obstacle hit—our location. The mall where we were renting space announced it was shutting down, giving all tenants just 60 days to relocate. It was devastating. With the news spreading quickly, commercial rental prices skyrocketed, making it extremely difficult to find an affordable and suitable new space. For a moment, it felt like history was repeating itself.
But giving up was never an option. I knew these dancers needed a safe space, a home where they could continue growing, learning, and thriving. I searched high and low, refusing to settle until I found the perfect place for them. And despite the challenges, we did.
Every obstacle we’ve faced has only made us stronger. These struggles weren’t just setbacks—they were lessons in perseverance, faith, and the power of never giving up on something you truly believe in. And through it all, Pink Pearls continues to rise.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Pink Pearls Dance Company?
At Pink Pearls Dance Company, we do far more than just teach dance—we build confidence, character, and a strong sense of community. We specialize in Majorette-style dance, a high-energy, performance-based art form that blends precision, creativity, and passion. However, what truly sets us apart is our commitment to mentorship and personal development. We are not just a dance team; we are a family that provides structure, guidance, and a positive outlet for young dancers, especially those who may not have access to these opportunities elsewhere.
Pink Pearls is known for our discipline, show-stopping performances, and unwavering dedication to excellence. Our dancers are trained to compete at the highest level, and their hard work has led us to incredible achievements—including making history on December 2, 2023, when we became the first Majorette dance company to win the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, ranking #1 in the country out of over 200 teams.
Beyond trophies and titles, what I am most proud of is the impact we have on the lives of our dancers. Many of them come to us seeking more than just dance; they need mentorship, guidance, and a safe space to grow. Seeing them develop not just as performers, but as strong, confident individuals who go on to pursue their dreams is the greatest reward.
What truly sets us apart is our story, our resilience, and our mission. We are not just teaching dance; we are shaping futures, breaking cycles, and proving that no matter where you come from, you can achieve greatness. Pink Pearls is more than a dance company—it’s a movement.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Absolutely. The COVID-19 crisis was one of the most challenging times for Pink Pearls Dance Company, but it also taught me some of the most valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the power of community.
It was a devastating loss, and I was on the verge of closing our doors. However, I realized that setbacks are not the end—they are just opportunities to rebuild stronger. Instead of giving up, I focused on finding new ways to engage with our dancers, reestablish our presence, and slowly grow again.
Another crucial lesson was the importance of flexibility and innovation. The pandemic forced us to think outside the box—whether it was finding new ways to train, adjusting to virtual sessions, or restructuring how we operated. It showed me that being able to adapt in difficult times is key to long-term success.
Most importantly, COVID-19 reinforced the value of community. The love and support we received from our dancers, families, and supporters reminded me why I started this journey in the first place. It’s not just about dance—it’s about providing a space where young people feel safe, supported, and empowered.
The pandemic was a test of faith, but it also strengthened our foundation. It showed me that no matter what challenges come our way, as long as we remain dedicated to our mission and open to growth, we can overcome anything.
