Hidden Gems: Meet Lindsey Gropman of The Waverly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Gropman.

Hi Lindsey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Connecticut and moved to Charleston in 2013 to attend College of Charleston where I studied Business Administration and Sociology. After graduating, I spent a year serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA for a local Charleston nonprofit that hired me on full time and later left that organization to be the event coordinator for the College of Charleston School of Business. In 2021, I started as the Director of Events for Uptown Hospitality Group where I built the group’s event program from scratch and helped it grow from one establishment, Uptown Social, to six locations today. I also pitched, conceptualized, and help launch the group’s first events-exclusive venue, The Waverly, where I now oversee all operations.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first started with Uptown Hospitality Group, they were known (and are still known for) having massive, vibrant bars and restaurants where you come to have a great time on a Friday or Saturday night. The spaces are beautiful but were not seen as a place where you could have an elegant, high-brow private event for a special occasion like a rehearsal dinner, welcome party or milestone event. I made it my mission to shift this perspective and chatted with every event professional in Charleston I could to establish us as the first place people think of to host any sort of celebration.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Waverly?
The Waverly is a wedding and events venue that was built to be a space that is as enticing for clients as it is for wedding vendors. We designed this space by consulting with every type of vendor: from planners; to florists; AV professionals; rental companies; caterers; photographers, we were intentional by asking them about what they like and dislike in Charleston’s existing venues and used that to guide the creation of the space. What resulted was something that is very unique in the Charleston market: a space guided by industry experts that is seamless, modern and effortless for couples to picture their big day in. Today is actually The Waverly’s one year anniversary (May 1st) and to date, I am most proud of flawlessly executing many weddings for people on their most important day and that they trusted us to host their vision.

What’s next?
I’m looking forward to continuing to usher The Waverly into its true potential and building Uptown Hospitality Group’s reputation within the Charleston events scene.
