Hidden Gems: Meet Lindsay Sales of Pure Salt Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Sales.

Hi Lindsay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, and from a young age, I always knew I wanted to eventually work for myself and build something of my own. After earning my degree in Marketing and Business and later completing my MBA with a concentration in Health Management from Moravian College (now Moravian University), I began my post-graduate career in property management.

While I enjoyed my career, entrepreneurship was always in the back of my mind. I had been practicing yoga since I was a teenager, and it became such an important part of my life—not only for my physical and mental well-being, but also for the community and social connection that came with it. At one point, I was actively looking into opening a yoga studio in my hometown in Pennsylvania because I knew I wanted to create a space centered around wellness and connection.

Then the opportunity to purchase Pure Salt Studios came along, along with the possibility of moving to the Lowcountry. It felt like one of those moments where life gives you an opportunity that you may not have planned for, but somehow just makes sense. I knew I was being pulled in that direction and that it was where I was supposed to be at that point in my life.

Making the move to Hilton Head Island and taking on Pure Salt Studios has been nothing but alignment for my life and my future. In many ways, it is exactly where I always envisioned myself ending up—building a business in wellness, being a part in our community, and living somewhere that feels like home.

I’m still very much in the building phase, and entrepreneurship has certainly been a journey of learning, growing, and figuring things out along the way. But when I look at the bigger picture, I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think that is one of the realities of small business ownership that people don’t always see from the outside. There are so many challenges that come with building a business, especially when you’re also trying to build your life at the same time.

When I purchased Pure Salt Studios, I was less than three years out of college and still in the very early stages of building my career. I had student debt, I was learning to financially stand on my own, and I was stepping away from the security blanket my parents had always provided through college. Suddenly, I was responsible for a business, its employees and providers, its customers, its finances, and its future. It was a huge leap of faith.

Now, 2.5 years into business ownership, I’m not going to pretend that I’ve reached the financial freedom, work-life balance, or flexibility that people sometimes associate with owning your own business. I’m still very much working toward those things. But what I have created is a life that I am incredibly proud of and genuinely happy to be a part of every day. And to me, that is just as important.

A big part of the journey has also been evolving Pure Salt Studios into what I envision it becoming. Shifting the business from what it once was toward a broader wellness experience—with new services, wellness offerings, and stronger community connections—has required taking risks and being willing to make changes even when there isn’t a guaranteed outcome.

We are also fortunate to have such a wonderful local community here in the Lowcountry. At the same time, being in a destination and tourist market keeps us on our toes. We constantly have to think about how we reach our local guests while also introducing Pure Salt Studios to new visitors coming to the island. That means continually evolving our marketing, finding new ways to connect with people, and making sure that when someone walks through our doors, they feel like they’ve found a little wellness safe space away from home.

So, no, it hasn’t been a smooth ride. But I think the challenges have been an important part of the journey. They’ve forced me to grow as a business owner and as a person, and I wouldn’t trade where that journey has brought me.

We’ve been impressed with Pure Salt Studios, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pure Salt Studios is a health and wellness spa located in Shelter Cove on Hilton Head Island. At its heart, it is a place to slow down, reset, and take care of yourself. We offer a variety of wellness experiences, including our Himalayan Salt Room and halotherapy, infrared sauna, cold plunge therapy, massage, yoga, meditation, sound healing, and other wellness services and experiences.

Our space is designed to feel like a true escape from the pace of everyday life. The Himalayan Salt Room is the heart of the spa, with Himalayan salt throughout the space and comfortable zero-gravity chairs where guests can settle in for a 45-minute halotherapy session. We also offer an infrared sauna and cold plunge, allowing guests to incorporate heat and cold therapy into their wellness routines. Our massage services provide another opportunity to slow down and focus on relaxation and recovery.

Beyond our individual services, we are continuing to build Pure Salt as a place for wellness experiences and community. We host yoga, meditation, sound healing, Pilates, private events, and collaborations with other local wellness professionals. I really enjoy bringing different practitioners and modalities into our space because I believe wellness looks different for everyone. Sometimes it is a quiet salt session or massage, sometimes it is a challenging yoga class, and sometimes it is simply taking 45 minutes to sit still and breathe.

We also have a small wellness boutique within the spa, which has become an important part of the Pure Salt experience. Guests can browse a curated selection of wellness products, gifts, self-care items, apparel, and other things that encourage you to continue that feeling of relaxation and wellness after you leave. I love that someone can come in for a service, discover something they love in the boutique, and leave with a little reminder to continue taking care of themselves at home.

Being located in Shelter Cove also gives us a really unique environment. We are surrounded by the beauty and energy of Hilton Head Island, and we have both a wonderful local community and visitors coming from all over the country. We want Pure Salt to be a place that locals consider part of their regular wellness routine, while also being a destination that visitors discover and make part of their Hilton Head experience.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is to start before you feel completely ready. If I had waited until I had everything figured out—the finances, the experience, the perfect plan, or the confidence—I probably would have never taken the leap.

At the same time, I think it is important to be realistic about what entrepreneurship actually looks like. Owning a business is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be challenging, unpredictable, and require sacrifices that you don’t always anticipate. There are going to be days when you question yourself, make mistakes, or wonder if you made the right decision. Those moments don’t necessarily mean you’re on the wrong path.

I would also encourage people to stay open to their journey changing. I originally envisioned myself staying in Pennsylvania, and instead I ended up owning a health and wellness spa in the Lowcountry. The destination wasn’t what I originally pictured, but it ended up being exactly what I needed. Sometimes the opportunity that comes along isn’t exactly what you thought you were looking for, but it can lead you somewhere even better.

And don’t be afraid to evolve. Businesses, careers, and people change. What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow, and that’s okay. Be willing to listen, learn, take calculated risks, and make adjustments along the way. Your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Trust yourself, stay curious, keep showing up, and allow yourself to grow into the person and the business you’re meant to become.
