Today we’d like to introduce you to Julya Friedman.
Hi Julya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
2014-2015, I was a hospice pharmacist and had Sasha who was 2 and pregnant with Sebastian. I was working in a pharmacy that provided local services to hospice patients (those who have a prognosis of 6 months or less to live.) I saw the incredible need for this community to have reach of medications. Many patients are at home with no family to take care of them and no transportation to obtain medications.
At the time my husband was pursuing a medical degree. I convinced my husband that opening a pharmacy to service the hospice community is a service that is needed in many states. We decided to liquidate everything we have, put his medical degree on hold, and invest all of our finances into this venture together.
In 2016 we opened our doors to GPS Pharmacy. We began servicing hospice and quickly realized the need for compounded medications.
Our pharmacy was built to have a concierge approach, a personal touch experience with every call, and free delivery to all. Our compounded preparations quickly gained popularity and now we are a premier provider of compounded preparations for Women’s and Men’s health and Veterinary industries across NC, SC, IL, and GA. We are expanding our services nationally to reach all those who are in need.
Currently, GPS Pharmacy is opening its doors to its brand new infusion and sterile pharmacy. Infusion therapy currently is experiencing drug shortages and the needs of our population are not being met. We quickly began this new venture in order to provide necessary products to Institutions, medical offices, and patients directly.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. But no great things are ever achieved with no risk and no commitment and sacrifice. When we moved to NC, we had nobody here. We were just a couple with two babies chasing a dream to provide a service that we believed was needed. We sold our home and put all of our savings to open the doors of our Pharmacy. There is nothing scarier than putting everything you have into one dream. We knew nothing about ownership, we didn’t have any connections in the community and we had no idea how quickly expenses add up in a pharmacy. All we knew was that what we were doing was unlike anyone else. I remember nights before we had our crew of drivers, where I would finish up the day at 9pm and had emergency deliveries driving down dirt roads at 1am to deliver medications to patients transitioning. I was the pharmacist, the technician, the customer service, the manager, the driver, the electrician, and so much more. I was everything that the business needed in order to make it grow.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Many big shifts.
I believe the future of pharmacy is custom and tailored medications. Biologics and other medications that target disease states more specifically and precisely.
I believe the future of pharmacy is also access with delivery. Every consumer should be able to get their medication at their door.
