Hidden Gems: Meet Esprit Oree of Stretch + Somatics | The Homebody Haven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esprit Oree

Hi Esprit, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have dealt with this rollercoaster of a relationship with my body since I was a child. I’ve loved, appreciated and spoke life to myself and with the same intensity have abused, neglected and done a lot of emotional harm to my body. When my biological father passed when I was 7, I didn’t how to process the feelings of grief and the finality of death (as a child wouldn’t) and found emotional comfort in food. I rapidly began to gain weight and started to notice the changes in my body. I’ve done almost every crash diet, ebbed and flowed through periods of restriction and binging, have fallen into deep depressions and have made it out to the other side.

Developing a practice and routine of mindfulness, movement and bodily awareness has been the key to healing that relationship. Understanding that my body is simply here to keep me alive and give me the ability and opportunity to move, to feel, to love. My work as a Somatic Practitioner and Holistic Bodyworker are a testament to that realization.

As a child, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I just knew that I wanted to help people, I wanted to be happy, and that I didn’t really want a job (lol). Or at least I didn’t want it to *feel* like a job. And I have found that thing. Being able to connect with people and help them find mobility, relief from pain and discomfort, develop body awareness and even release some deeply buried emotions and weight has been such a rewarding experience. To be able to hold space for them to come back to their home, their body is truly a blessing that I do not take lightly.

I have had to do a lot of work to come to a place of acceptance and self love and it is an everlasting journey, but I am so blessed to be able to go on that journey with myself and bring others along for the ride.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been as easy road. On a personal level dealing with the ups and downs and disordered eating, self-judgement and body dysmorphia has been a tough journey. On an educational and professional level dealing with a huge mental breakdown in college, feeling lost, stuck and confused has made me question what my purpose in this life is.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
As a Somatic Practitioner and Holistic Bodyworker, I help people release stored tension, emotions and energy out of the body through manual compressions, tractioning, assisted stretch combined with somatic techniques that relax the mind, bring awareness to the breath and ease the nervous system. Sessions are uniquely tailored to a clients particular needs in a calming and private environment.

I’ve recently started host group workshops that included breathwork, journaling meditations, deep stretch sequences and body scans. Its been great to expand this work to groups. It would be a dream to provide these services on tours, tv/film/stage set since I have a background in acting/performance.

Clients and participants describe feeling lighter with more motion and freedom in their body after sessions. My greatest compliment and honor.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I’m a native to Charleston, so it is home to me. The beach, driving around downtown with my mom as she chats my ear off (lovingly) about growing up in the city and having my family within reach are some of my favorite things. I do miss the quiet that Charleston used to possess. But change is inevitable, so finding ways to adapt are just a part of life.
