Hidden Gems: Meet Erika Lloyd of Baxter’s Bed and Biscuit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Lloyd.

Hi Erika, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
”My journey started at CSU, where I learned the value of leadership and critical thinking. But the real lesson began when I started working one-on-one with animals. I realized that my degree wasn’t just for my resume—it was a tool I could use to provide a higher, more compassionate standard of care.
I’ve dedicated myself to understanding the ‘why’ behind animal behavior, but I never let the science get in the way of the soul.
Fear Free Care: My focus is always on your pet’s emotional well-being. If they’re scared or stressed, we slow down. We lead with love, not just logic.
I am A Voice for the Misunderstood: I specialize in aggression and complex behaviors because I believe every dog deserves a friend who won’t give up on them.
This work requires grit, but it also requires a soft heart. Whether we’re navigating a high-energy walk or working through a tough behavioral moment, your pet will always be treated with the tenderness and respect they deserve.”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest initial shock was realizing that a master’s degree and a love for animals didn’t automatically make me a business owner. Suddenly, I wasn’t just a behaviorist; I was the marketing department, the accountant, and the 24/7 customer service rep. Learning to set professional boundaries was a steep curve. In the beginning, you want to help every animal, but you quickly realize that if you don’t manage your schedule and your “business brain,” you’ll burn out before you can make a real impact.

As you know, we’re big fans of Baxter’s Bed and Biscuit . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Specializing in animal behavior and aggression adds a layer of intensity most pet sitters never face. There is a high physical and emotional stakes involved. When you’re working with a dog that has a history of aggression, there is zero margin for error. That is why all employees at Baxter’s Bed and Biscuit have certifications for Pet Sitters International.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to support a professional in this field is to acknowledge that pet care is skilled labor. When you hire someone who is Fear Free Certified and holds a master’s degree, you aren’t just paying for a walk; you’re paying for safety, behavioral insight, and years of specialized education.

If you have a friend with a “difficult” dog, don’t suggest a random neighborhood kid. Refer them to a specialist who understands aggression. It saves lives.
