Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Berr.
Erika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, I rode horses and in junior high our family veterinarian Dr. Rezzonico allowed me to begin shadowing him. I then went to Colorado State University for her Bachelor’s in Animal Sciences, where I continued volunteering and shadowing another veterinarian, Dr. Richard Wheeler; while at CSU I also met my husband, Scott; upon completing my Bachelor’s, I worked in Holyoke, Colorado, on a sow farm before moving to Texas for a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences at Texas A& M University. Finally, Colorado called me back for my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. I graduated from Colorado State University in May of 2021.
I have always had a strong interest in livestock reproduction, large animal medicine and the variety of small animal medicine. This passion led to the founding of Country Creatures Veterinary Care, an ambulatory large animal – focused veterinary clinic.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, I applied to veterinary school 4x and did not come from a strong financial background. I worked part time to full time hours throughout all of my undergraduate and master’s degree to help pay for housing. I’m sure it wasn’t as difficult as some, but I also wouldn’t call this path easy.
