Hidden Gems: Meet Dennis Aliaksandrou of Charleston Photo Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Aliaksandrou.

Hi Dennis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Dennis Aliaksandrou, and I’m the lead photographer and videographer behind Charleston Photo Art, a Charleston wedding photographer and proposal photography studio based in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

My journey into photography started with a simple love for storytelling. I’ve always been inspired by genuine emotions — the nervous excitement before a proposal, the joy of a wedding day, the quiet connection during an engagement session. What began as a creative passion gradually turned into a full-time business as more couples in Charleston trusted me to capture some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.

Over the years, Charleston Photo Art has grown into a trusted team specializing in Charleston proposal photography, wedding photography, elopements, and engagement sessions. My wife, Iryna, manages client communication and planning, and together we’ve built a smooth, stress-free experience for couples.

Today, after photographing hundreds of weddings and proposals and earning 350+ five-star reviews, my focus remains the same: creating natural, timeless images while guiding couples through every step so they feel confident and relaxed in front of the camera. What started as a passion has become a full-time career built on trust, experience, and a deep love for Charleston and the couples who choose it as the place to start their next chapter.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road — like any small business, especially in the wedding industry, there have been challenges along the way.

When I first started building Charleston Photo Art as a Charleston wedding photographer and proposal photographer, one of the biggest struggles was earning trust in a competitive market. Charleston is filled with talented creatives, and standing out required not just strong images, but a consistent client experience, fast communication, and a clear brand message.

Another challenge was learning the business side of photography — contracts, pricing structures, SEO, website optimization, advertising, workflow automation, album production, and building relationships with local venues. Photography is art, but running a photography company is strategy. It took time to refine both.

Seasonality in Charleston was also something I had to adapt to. Wedding season, hurricane forecasts, last-minute proposal changes, and unpredictable weather all require flexibility and strong backup plans. Over time, those challenges actually strengthened our systems. Now we prepare clients with detailed planning guides, maps, rain plans, and clear communication so nothing feels stressful.

Looking back, the struggles were necessary. They helped us grow from simply taking beautiful pictures to becoming a trusted Charleston proposal and wedding photography team known for reliability, experience, and consistency. Every obstacle pushed us to improve — and that’s what built the foundation we have today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Charleston Photo Art?
Charleston Photo Art is a Charleston wedding photography and videography studio specializing in proposals, elopements, engagements, and full wedding days. We are based in Mount Pleasant and serve couples throughout Charleston, South Carolina, including historic downtown, West Ashley, James and Johns Islands, Summerville, North Charleston, and the Charleston beaches.

What truly sets us apart is not just the images — it’s the planning experience behind them. We are especially known as Charleston proposal photographers because we help clients plan the entire surprise from start to finish. That includes custom location recommendations, maps, behind-the-scenes planning guidance, timing advice, rain backup plans, and even exact instructions on where to stand for the best light and background. Many of our clients are visiting Charleston from out of state, so we act as both photographer and local guide.

For weddings and elopements, we focus on creating a stress-free experience. My wife, Iryna, manages communication and logistics, which allows us to provide a highly organized and responsive process. From timeline planning to vendor coordination and album design, we’ve built clear systems so couples feel confident every step of the way.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve built in Charleston. With hundreds of five-star reviews, repeat referrals, and long-term relationships with venues and planners, our reputation is built on reliability, professionalism, and consistent results. We blend natural emotion with timeless composition, creating images that feel authentic while still looking polished and elegant.

At the heart of our brand is guidance. Many couples tell us they are shy in front of the camera — and we specialize in helping them feel comfortable. Our approach is calm, friendly, and structured, which allows real emotion to unfold naturally.

More than anything, I want readers to know that Charleston Photo Art is about more than photography. It’s about helping couples fully enjoy one of the most meaningful days of their lives while knowing every detail is thoughtfully handled.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that might surprise people is how much of my work happens long before I ever pick up the camera.

Most people see the final images — the proposal moment, the wedding portraits, the emotional reactions — but they don’t always realize how structured and strategic the planning process is behind the scenes. I spend a lot of time studying light patterns in specific Charleston locations, tracking seasonal crowd levels, creating custom maps for clients, and even testing exact standing positions so the background looks perfect in that one life-changing moment.

Another surprising thing is that I’m very detail-oriented and analytical. Photography is creative, but I also genuinely enjoy systems, organization, and efficiency — refining workflows, improving client communication, optimizing our website, and constantly learning about SEO and business strategy. That balance between art and structure is actually what allows Charleston Photo Art to feel smooth and stress-free for clients.

And on a personal level, I’m naturally a calm person — which turns out to be one of the most valuable traits when photographing surprise proposals or wedding days. No matter what happens — weather changes, timeline shifts, nerves — I stay steady. That calm energy helps couples feel grounded, especially during emotional moments.

So while our brand is known for romantic, joyful images, behind it is a lot of preparation, structure, and quiet focus that most people never see — but absolutely benefit from.
