Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Maloney.
Hi Christy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I appreciate you interviewing me! My name is Christy Maloney and I am a Registered Dietitian in upstate SC. My journey to becoming an RD had some twists and turns but it has been a fun journey.
When I went to college for the first time, I majored in psychology. I loved this major and enjoyed everything I learned. Upon graduation, I went to work in banking. By age 25, I knew I could not work in corporate America. At this time, I decided to go back to school to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). I returned to school in January, 2007 to pursue my degree in dietetics. I completed my dietetics degree and the dietetic internship in July, 2011.
My first job as a Registered Dietitian was working at a large regional hospital in South Carolina. I worked with various acute populations and developed skills as a clinical dietitian that help me today. After working in the clinical setting for two years, I went to work at an eating disorders treatment facility in Charlotte, NC, as the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) dietitian. I worked here for four years and learned how to treat persons suffering from acute eating disorders. After leaving this facility in early 2017, I went to work for another local group practice in Charlotte, focusing on outpatient nutrition.
In February 2019, my dream of opening Enhance Nutrition Associates came to fruition. What started as a practice with just myself has grown to a practice of seven Registered Dietitians and a practice manager. Enhance Nutrition focuses on outpatient treatment of eating disorders, disordered eating, body image disturbances, and medical nutrition therapy. I’m proud that our company sees clients across 14 states and accepts medical insurance to help make treatment as accessible as possible.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
This road has had some obstacles along the way. One of the most complex parts was learning what I wanted to do in dietetics. Working in clinical dietetics gave me a foundation to understand various aspects of dietetics and help narrow it down. Leaving a salaried job at the eating disorder treatment facility to go to work as a 1099 contractor with no paycheck guarantee was very difficult! I felt I had made a huge mistake and was very anxious going through this transition. Looking back, it was the best I could have made for my career.
Starting a business is also really hard! I have put into place a team of professionals to guide me and have built the business brick by brick. There are always surprises here and there when starting a business just because you don’t know what you don’t know. But you learn and keep moving.

I wish I would have known that I would get there! That it takes hard work every day. It takes being willing to fail at times to grow. It takes admitting that you don’t know it all or can’t do it all and being open to hiring key people to help you.
