Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Shoemaker
Christopher, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Bluffton, South Carolina. My father was a shrimp boat captain, and I started going out on his trips at the age of 5 years old. We lived on the May River and when I was around 10 years old, I started taking out our little Carolina Skiff shrimping, crabbing and fishing. I attended the local schools then went onto the University of South Carolina where I graduated from in 2007. I came back home and worked a few jobs and in 2010 decided to start May River Excursions with one 24′ Carolina skiff doing river tours, fishing, crabbing, shrimping and shuttles to Daufuskie Island. Fifteen years later May River Excursions has 7 boats and a retail store up on Calhoun St in Old town Bluffton.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say its been a learning experience. Always trying to make the excursions better and make the experience better for the customer.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
May River Excursions is a provider of water activities on the May River and surrounding areas off of Hilton Head Island and Daufuskie. We offer a variety of excursions ranging from fishing, shrimping and crabbing to water taxi service between Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie and Palmetto Bluff. What sets us apart from other operators is that we are family run, and we have been in the area for generations. Our guides are knowledgeable of the area and when folks go on an excursion they get a genuine native experience. When folks go on an excursion with May River Excursions, they can expect an all-encompassing excursion regardless of what they decide to go on with a Captain that is knowledgeable of the surrounding area.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Bluffton is a perfect sized town along the May River. The streets are walkable with plenty of shops and restaurants and the best part is that it is along the May River. If you love the outdoors then this is a perfect place. There are no negatives about Bluffton.
