Today we’d like to introduce you to April Mudrick.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I spent many years in management before leaving my position in January 2020. My children were all grown and for the first time in my life, I felt like it was finally the right time to pursue something just for me. I had a few ideas, but having my own business was always on my mind.
I was 48 years old and I wondered if I had waited too long or if this was even the right time to do something this big. But I also realized I wanted something different for this next season of my life. I wanted the freedom that comes with having my own business and the ability to create something meaningful while having the flexibility to be there for my family. That balance became just as important to me as becoming an entrepreneur.
I was also so fortunate to have a husband that totally believed in me and encouraged me to take the chance on myself. Having my husband (and family) cheering me on gave me the little push that I needed to keep exploring ideas. I knew I wanted to build something creative that would help people bring a little more happiness into their lives. I had no idea that the path to doing that would come through my love of dogs, but looking back, it feels like everything fell into place exactly as it was meant to be.
The idea came unexpectedly when my daughter adopted a new pup. We searched everywhere for cute bandanas but couldn’t find the prints we were looking for. Around the same time, I was researching several dog boxes and thinking that there had to be a better experience for dog lovers like us. Instead of settling for what was available, I decided to create the kind of dog subscription box that I had been searching for. One that elevated the dog box experience with beautifully handmade bandanas, enrichment focused toys, healthy treats and themed details that made each box opening feel like a special gift.
I launched Sweet Paws Shop in 2020, beginning with handcrafted bandanas while I learned what my customers loved most. Over the next few years, I listened to my community, explored different themes and products, and refined my vision until I had the perfect subscription box. In 2022, I officially launched Sweet Paws Box and we’ve been creating monthly experiences for dogs ever since.
Starting a business in 2020 certainly wasn’t what I had envisioned, but it taught me resilience from the very beginning and reinforced how much I believed in what I was building.
Today, every bandana is still thoughtfully made, and every subscription box is curated with the same excitement I felt when I packed the very first one. One of the greatest blessings of this journey has been the incredible community that has grown around Sweet Paws. I never imagined how many sweet dogs and dog lovers I would meet along the way, and I am so grateful for the loyal supporters who cheer on my small business. Their encouragement, kind words and excitement for every box inspire me every single month.
Looking back, I’m grateful I took the leap because it gave me not only a business I love, but a life that reflects what matters most to me: family, creativity, meaningful connections and bringing joy to others.
Starting my business at 48 taught me that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. Sometimes the right opportunity doesn’t come when you’re younger. It comes when life has given you the confidence, perspective, and courage to finally believe in yourself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has made me a better business owner.
When I started, I was determined to learn every aspect of my business myself. I had no background in websites, photography, social media, marketing, or e-commerce. In fact, I consider myself pretty low-tech, so building my website was one of the biggest hurdles I faced.
I’ve learned that running a small business means constantly stepping outside your comfort zone. I’ve had to ask for help, learn new skills, solve problems I never expected, and wear every hat imaginable.
Looking back, those obstacles have given me more confidence. Every challenge I worked through reminded me that I was capable of more than I thought, and it helped to strengthen my commitment to the business I’m building.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Sweet Paws Shop LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
After many years of running other people’s businesses, I realized I wanted to build something of my own. I wanted the freedom to create, connect with customers personally, and build a business around products I truly believed in.
Today I combine my love of creativity with entrepreneurship, curating themed subscription boxes that encourage meaningful moments between dogs and their families. One of my favorite parts of owning a small business is hearing from subscribers whose dogs get so very excited when their monthly box of dog happiness arrives.
From the beginning, I wanted Sweet Paws to be more than a subscription box. I wanted it to be a business that not only brings happiness, but builds community and gives back. Each quarter, we donate a portion of our profits to organizations that help dogs in need.
I also love celebrating the pups and people who support my small business, so we created a free dog Birthday Club. Every month we send birthday cards and gift vouchers out as a way to say thank you for being part of the Sweet Paws family.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up having what I’d call a classic Gen X childhood. We spent our days outside riding bikes, exploring the neighborhood, and staying out until the streetlights came on.
Creativity was also a big part of my family. My mom crafted our Halloween costumes, and my grandma could make just about anything, from doll clothes to handmade gifts. Watching them be so creative definitely inspired me from an early age.
As I got older, I naturally gravitated toward creative hobbies myself. I loved making crafts and taking classes like ceramics, and I think those early experiences planted the seed for the creative business I would eventually build years later.
