Today we’d like to introduce you to Ying Tonndorf.
Hi Ying, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My journey began in the vibrant and culturally rich Philippines, where I was born and raised. This early chapter instilled in me a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and the value of hard work. However, it was my over a decade-long tenure in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai and Abu Dhabi), a global hub for business and luxury travel, that truly shaped my professional path. Working in the UAE, a country synonymous with luxury and innovation, I honed my skills in the travel (airline and aviation) industry and developed an eye for the finer details in luxury travel experiences. Transitioning to California, I embraced the challenge of balancing my role as an HR professional in a non-profit organization with my passion for freelance luxury travel advising. This dual career path has been a testament to my commitment to social responsibility and pursuing excellence in the travel sector. My experiences across different continents – Asia, Europe (I have familial ties in Germany), the Middle East, and now, North America – have given me a unique perspective on both the non-profit realm and the luxury travel industry. My career trajectory is a blend of diverse cultural experiences and a dedication to excellence in every endeavor. Whether providing insightful travel advice for luxury destinations or coordinating impactful projects for a non-profit, my journey reflects a deep commitment to making a positive difference in every aspect of my work. As I continue to evolve professionally, I remain passionate about leveraging my international experience to offer unparalleled services in luxury travel and meaningful contributions in the non-profit sector. This unique combination of skills and experiences sets me apart in both realms.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has sometimes been challenging, but it has been gratifying. The transition was challenging, requiring me to adapt to a fast-paced, diverse professional environment while staying true to my roots and values. In Dubai & Abu Dhabi, I faced the hurdles typical of a burgeoning career in a cosmopolitan city – from navigating cultural differences to establishing a name in the airline and aviation sectors. These experiences honed my resilience and shaped my approach to business, teaching me the importance of adaptability and cultural sensitivity. My move to California marked another significant transition into the non-profit sector while continuing my passion for travel. Balancing these roles hasn’t been easy, especially as a woman of color striving to make an impact in two distinct fields. The challenges have included mastering the delicate art of time management, understanding the nuances of non-profit work, and maintaining a high standard of service in the luxury travel advisory. Despite these challenges, my journey has been enriched by each experience. From the vibrant streets of The Philippines to the dynamic skyline of Dubai, and now in the diverse landscape of California, every struggle has been an opportunity for growth. These experiences have allowed me to develop a unique perspective, blending insights from different cultures and industries. Thanks to my host agency, Fora, for believing in my potential. Their willingness to take a chance on me has truly made a difference. For that, I am forever grateful. They have been a guiding force and integral to my travel story. While the road hasn’t always been smooth, the struggles along the way have been instrumental in shaping who I am today – a resilient woman, a skilled travel advisor, and a dedicated HR professional. These challenges have strengthened my professional insight and reinforced my commitment to making a meaningful difference in every aspect of my work.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
We expect to see shifts and trends in the luxury travel industry in the next 5 to 10 years. Evolving traveler preferences, technological advancements, and a strong focus on sustainability and personalization will influence these changes. Technology will play a role in shaping travel experiences. Integrating technology into luxury travel will bring convenience and immersive experiences with AI-powered personalization and virtual reality previews of destinations leading the way. One notable trend in the travel industry is the increasing focus on health and wellness. Travelers are now seeking experiences that promote mental well-being, which has led to a rise in wellness retreats, spa vacations, and travel packages centered around activities like yoga, meditation, and nature immersion. Another emerging trend is blending business and leisure travel, commonly known as “bleisure.” Luxury travelers are increasingly combining their business trips with leisure experiences. This growing trend has created a demand for accommodations and services catering to work-related needs and relaxation. Travelers are also expressing an increasing interest in exploring lesser-known destinations. They seek out hidden gems off the beaten path to avoid tourist spots. Authenticity and tranquility become factors as they search for experiences. Safety concerns remain paramount in light of the pandemic’s impact on travel. Travelers will expect cleanliness standards, flexible booking options, and comprehensive safety measures to ensure their well-being during their journeys. Experiences that provide cultural immersion opportunities continue to be sought after by travelers. The desire to engage with cultures through activities remains strong. Travelers are increasingly interested in forming connections with the places they visit, seeking out cultural experiences, local cuisine, and exploration of historical sites. Luxury cruising and private jet journeys will also experience growth, providing exclusive travel experiences.
