Exploring Life & Business with Tonya Tittle of Energy Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Tittle.

Hi Tonya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been an athlete since age 14 — running cross-country and track through high school and college. Running was more than competition; it was stress relief, focus, and the spark for my lifelong passion for health. Around the same time, I picked up weightlifting — a habit I’ve kept ever since because it’s the key to staying strong, mobile, and resilient. It’s also one of the first things I teach my clients: as we age, strength training isn’t optional. It’s what keeps our joints happy, our muscles firing, and our lives active.

That personal love of movement and a nudge from my husband Mark with his entrepreneurial spirit led me to open Energy Fitness in Memphis, TN in 2002, a boutique wellness studio built on accountability, injury-smart training, and whole-body health. I came prepared with an undergrad in Physical Education/Health & Wellness Leadership, a Master’s in Exercise Science, certification as an ACSM Exercise Physiologist, and numerous specialty certifications to stay ahead of the research. Clients often joke they can tell I know the body inside out — probably because I’ve taken human anatomy four times and still geek out on it.

When I launched Energy Fitness, we offered one-hour private sessions with light nutrition coaching. Within two years, I developed our Energize Method: efficient 30-minute semi-private sessions where one trainer leads 2–3 clients, each on their own tailored program built from fitness assessments, goals, injury history, and motivation level. By 2006, we expanded into more holistic coaching with nutrition, supplements, and massage therapy partnerships. In 2021, I became a Licensed Massage Therapist myself, adding hands-on recovery and sports therapy to what we offer. Along the way, I’ve written over 300 copyrighted programs, with modifications to keep clients consistent and training safely around injuries.

All of our trainers follow the Energize Method, so even if clients switch times or trainers, their program stays consistent. After relocating the studio to the Greenville/Travelers Rest, SC area, I was honored in 2025 to be voted one of the Top 3 Personal Trainers in the Upstate — within just two years of arriving.

Energy Fitness has always been a boutique studio that empowers clients, mostly ages 35–75+, to stay accountable, move better, and train smart around injuries so they can keep hiking mountains, chasing grandkids, or simply living without pain.

In a nutshell, Energy Fitness is your one-stop boutique studio for whole-body wellness. We offer personal training, nutrition coaching, massage therapy, Reiki therapy, and facials — all designed to keep you strong, aligned, and feeling your best inside and out. Our philosophy is simple: keep clients accountable, help them move better, and train smart around limitations so they can keep living without pain. At Energy Fitness, we live by our motto: Train Smart. Stay Ready.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth road? Definitely not. Being a business owner means you don’t just work in the business, you work on the business. My degrees prepared me to coach clients, but not to juggle marketing, accounting, staffing, or the endless software it takes to keep things running. I even hired a fitness business coaching company to help me build better systems for hiring and operations so Energy Fitness could grow without burning me out.

And then there’s the not-so-glamorous side: construction and loans. When we expanded in 2006 and again when we relocated to South Carolina, we went through the pain of renovations and had to take out loans over $100k both times — for buildings we didn’t even own, just leased. Those experiences tested every ounce of patience and grit.

Oh, and did I mention I was also raising two boys during all of this? Between school, sports, and keeping our family life full and active, the juggling act was real. But hey — that’s what women do, right? We wear all the hats, handle all the chaos, and somehow still keep the wheels turning. The road hasn’t been smooth, but every bump made me tougher and Energy Fitness stronger.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Energy Fitness, our 30-minute semi-private sessions deliver personalized strength, mobility, and accountability through the proven Energize Method — a science-backed, whole-body approach to lifelong wellness. We’re not a membership gym; we’re a results-driven coaching studio, by appointment only, offered both onsite and via Zoom.

Your journey starts with a discovery call where we talk about your goals and share exactly how we work — including the investment. If it feels like the right fit, we’ll schedule a consultation. That’s where we dig deeper into your goals, exercise history, injuries, and nutrition habits. We also walk you through a visual of the Energize Method, which blends strength training twice a week, smart nutrition and supplements, accountability, flexibility, and ongoing coaching. If you’re excited about the process, the next step is usually a fitness assessment.

Our assessments are gold — they give us a clear snapshot of your fitness level. They count as sessions and are repeated every 12 workouts (or about every 6 weeks). We use biometric measurements and a functional movement screen to evaluate the quality of your movement across different areas of the body. This tells us exactly which exercises belong in your program. (And no, we don’t share body fat percentages in the initial assessment — it’s rarely motivating. Instead, we track it later as proof of progress… or as a reality check if nutrition recommendations aren’t being followed.)

To support clients beyond training, we provide individualized nutrition coaching — often leaning plant-forward — with meal plans, blood type insights, Ayurvedic guidance, and strategies tailored to your personality and needs. We also offer holistic services, including Massage Therapy, Reiki, Facials & Body Treatments, cupping, and blading. And because we’re always evolving, yoga classes are coming soon to complete the mind-body connection.

What sets us apart from other trainers is our depth of knowledge and our whole-body approach: addressing strength, mobility, nutrition, recovery, and lifestyle habits all under one roof.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Energy Fitness has stayed true to what I set out to build back in 2002 — a boutique studio where people feel supported, educated, and empowered, never intimidated.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Your health is your greatest investment, and it’s never too late to start. Whether you’re 35, 70, or anywhere in between, you can get stronger, move better, and feel more confident in your body. At Energy Fitness, we’re here to keep you accountable, train around injuries, and give you the tools to thrive — not just survive.

And remember our motto: Train Smart. Stay Ready. Life doesn’t wait, so why should you?
