Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Ungar
Hi Mike, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Throughout my nearly 5 years in the United States Army and 35 years with Michelin, I have enjoyed coaching others whether it was as a manager of a team or as part of my job responsibilities. When I was considering what I would do next back in 2019, I chose to make a career change and become a FocalPoint Business Coach and Executive Coach. This shift enabled me to pursue one of my passions – coaching – and gave my wife and I more flexibility to choose how we spent our time. We have three grandchildren and enjoy being able to spend time with them and their parents.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I decided to change careers and become a Business Coach, I had no idea what was about to happen. I decided to become a Coach in December 2019 and attended training in February 2020. Then COVID took hold of the world. I chose to continue on the path towards becoming a business coach and left Michelin in May 2020. An important principle to follow is that you cannot control the environment. Things happen outside of your control. What you can control is how you prepare for and respond to these environmental challenges. This is an important lesson for any business leader or executive. Like many of us, when COVID hit we had to learn how to work differently if we were going to stay in business. I too had to change my approach in serving clients in order to succeed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
FocalPoint takes the proven business coaching techniques of the world-famous business trainer and author, Brian Tracy, and blends them with the business skills and experience of its coaches. As a Coach, it is my responsibility to work with clients to learn about their needs and develop a customized plan to support them on their journey to achieve their full potential as a leader and to help them maximize their results.
Business leaders typically need support in one of four areas:
1. Time. Many leaders work long hours sacrificing time with their families or their hobbies. One cannot make more time. Rather, time has to be used more effectively.
2. Team. A leader cannot do it alone. Quite often their team isn’t performing as well as it can. The leader has a significant impact on a team’s impact.
3. Money. Many business leaders of small to mid-size businesses either struggle with cash flow or revenue growth.
4. Future. Quite often a business leader is consumed with serving client’s needs today and doesn’t have a plan for the the business three to five years from now. Developing a strategic plan is key to a businesses long-term success.
FocalPoint coaches are the “Pebble on the Pond.” We impact the world first through our clients, then their families, employees, companies, communities, region, country, and the world.
How do you think about luck?
Each of us makes our own luck. We make decisions everyday based upon our values and our goals. These decisions in turn create outcomes. If the outcome isn’t what we had hoped it would be, this doesn’t mean it was “bad luck.” Rather, this outcome is an opportunity to learn and make a better decision next time that will have a better outcome.
