Exploring Life & Business with Matthew Eiken of The Mauldin Clinic of Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Eiken.

Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been in chiropractic for nearly 30 years now, and my path early on shaped everything I do today.

While I was in chiropractic college, my wife and I were trying to start a family and went through multiple miscarriages. Someone referred us to Dr. Michael Kale, who specialized in upper cervical knee-chest technique. After a series of atlas-axis adjustments, my wife became pregnant and carried our daughter to term, and later we had our son as well. That experience had a profound impact on me and changed the direction of my career.

After graduating from Texas Chiropractic College in 1997, I pursued advanced training in upper cervical care and moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to work directly under Dr. Kale. I spent the next eight years practicing exclusively upper cervical technique and helping manage his research center, where we saw patients from across the country dealing with chronic migraines, vertigo, trigeminal neuralgia, dystonia, TMJ issues, and other complex neurological conditions.

That foundation still shapes how I practice today. At The Mauldin Clinic of Chiropractic, I provide full-spine care, but I continue to draw on that early experience—especially when working with more complex or long-standing cases.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road.

I opened my practice on September 12, 2001 – the day after 9/11 – so it was certainly an unforgettable time to be starting a business. Over the years, we’ve also dealt with things like multiple office floods – five, to be exact – which eventually pushed us to move into a new building that, thankfully, no longer floods.

Like any small business, there have been challenges along the way, but for me it’s always been about continuing to grow, adapt, and take care of the people who trust us with their health. That part has made it all worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Mauldin Clinic of Chiropractic. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I own and operate The Mauldin Clinic of Chiropractic, where we provide full-spine chiropractic care for patients of all ages. Along with common spine-related concerns, we also see many people who have been dealing with more complex, long-standing issues and are still looking for answers.

What matters most to me is the standard of care we hold ourselves to. I’m proud of the team we’ve built and the environment we’ve created. We treat people the way we would want our own family to be treated – meaning we take the time to listen, evaluate carefully, and stay consistent in how we care for them.

After nearly 30 years in practice, I still value the work itself. I enjoy the process, the problem-solving, and the opportunity to help people improve in a meaningful way.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in the 70s and 80s, so like a lot of kids back then, we were pretty much left to figure things out on our own. Most of my time was spent outside – riding bikes, fishing, camping, and just staying active.

Sports were a big part of my life. I played baseball and was heavily involved in wrestling, so I was always pushing myself physically. I’ve always been pretty hands-on and drawn to understanding how the body works, even before I realized it.

When I was about 13, I had a bad fall off a skateboard and injured my neck. That was my first experience with chiropractic care, and it stuck with me. Looking back, that was probably the first time I saw how much of a difference the right kind of care could make.
