Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Green.
Hi Matt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I spent most of my adult life pursuing a career in music. I played drum for a band in the late 1990’s and moved to Nashville, TN in 2003 where I attended a trade school for audio engineering and music production.
After finding myself with a family and a need to develop a career, I released my own album in 2008 as somewhat of a last hoorah.
For full transparency I chose to go back to school for accounting simply because it is the most structured career path I could identify. I will be 48 this month and went back to school at age 35. I obtained a Bachelor’s in Accounting and then an MBA with a concentration in Accounting. Along the way I have also become an IRS Enrolled Agent and QuickBooks ProAdvisor.
I worked for CPA Firm for roughly 5 years and founded Ledger Medial Accounting Services in August 2020.
We offer tax preparation, bookkeeping, tax planning , and register LLCs along with other services in that realm.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth ride. Attending school full time while working full time and raising 3 children was challenging to say the least. I was very fortunate to find myself in a situation to have significant real world accounting experience starting about 8 months before finishing my bachelor’s and continuing until today, now roughly 10 years into my accounting career.
The learning curve of owning my own business these past 5 years has been very steep. Although there were many, my 2 biggest lessons learned were first understanding the seasonality of my business with being tax heavy in terms of cash flow and second is to have a plan and capacity for training someone prior to hiring them.
In early 2023 I had a plan to hire 1 senior employee and 1 entry level employee. I was unable to find the perfect fit in terms of senior employee and instead hired 2 entry level employees with the notion my then 1.5 year employee would be able to train them. This went wrong for many reasons and took nearly 2 years to fully correct.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is centered around the belief that most accounting firms have roots dating back several decades and will never be able to fully start over in how they view what a modern accounting firm (or business for that matter) actually is. Purchasing firms and/or expanding geographically by brick and mortar has its place at times yet as a general practice causes more issues than solutions. Another example of this outdated mentality is naturally printing paper (dead trees) tax returns. The amount spent on paper and ink is minimal, yet it is more the resources in terms of team members that could be better using their time providing exceptional customer service.
The entire United States contains our potential clients, not just where we have and office. This mindset has allowed us to not only obtain clients, but also develop referral relationships from Washington state down to California over to New York and down to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our lean mentality allows our net income to be nearly 70% of revenue.
We offer virtual bookkeeping services, tax preparation for businesses and individuals, tax planning, entity registration such as LLC’s and also all-inclusive services that encompass al of this. We are currently happy to meet in-person with anyone on our area yet this usually not necessary and we may discontinue this at some point in the near future.
I believe the attribute we are most known for is communication and responsiveness as the lack of has become an epidemic in the accounting profession.
In terms of our brand the ultimate plan would be to have everyone informally refer to us simply as “ledger.” I have actually heard this a few times, and what could be more powerful than an accounting firm being referred to by one of the most common accounting terms.
What matters most to you?
I never want to be paid for something we did not earn. Exceeding expectations is always the goal. This is the right thing to do ethically and also will result in our natural growth just as it has.
