Exploring Life & Business with Martinson Yeboah Mintah of Model Commonwealth Summit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martinson Yeboah Mintah.

Hi Martinson, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Martinson Yeboah, a Ghanaian passionate about education, public policy, and leadership. My journey began at the University of Ghana, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and later a master’s in research and public policy. Driven by a desire to make a difference, I founded The Organization for Policy and Leadership Development, where I currently serve as Executive Director. My mission is to empower young leaders to engage in critical discussions and shape their future through initiatives like the Model Commonwealth Summit.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. Early in my career, I faced the challenge of gaining credibility in a field dominated by established professionals. Navigating the complexities of diplomacy and youth engagement required resilience and adaptability. However, these challenges fueled my determination to create platforms where young voices could be heard and valued.

We’ve been impressed with Model Commonwealth Summit , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the Executive Director of The Organization for Policy and Leadership Development, an initiative dedicated to empowering young leaders through education, public policy, and leadership training. Our organization specializes in creating platforms that facilitate youth engagement in meaningful discussions, particularly around issues that impact the Commonwealth and beyond.

We are known for our flagship event, the Model Commonwealth Summit, which simulates the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). This summit provides a unique opportunity for young delegates to engage in lively debates, develop critical thinking skills, and collaborate on innovative solutions to pressing global challenges. By using accessible language and relatable formats, we demystify complex political processes, making them more approachable for young people. Notably, the Model Commonwealth Summit has been marked by the Commonwealth Secretariat as one of the 2023/24 Year of Youth Legacy Projects of the Commonwealth Youth Programme, highlighting its significance and impact.

What sets us apart is our commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. The Model Commonwealth Summit creates a space for Commonwealth diplomacy, youth mainstreaming, and networking, contributing to the advancement of the Commonwealth. We emphasize realism, educational focus, life skills, and diplomacy, ensuring that participants gain valuable experiences. Our engaging and knowledgeable officials bureau facilitates meaningful interactions, empowering youth participation through focused committee time.

I am most proud of our ability to inspire a sense of community among young changemakers. The feedback from participants highlights a strong desire for continued engagement, with many expressing anticipations for future summits. This enthusiasm is a testament to the positive change we are fostering.

I want readers to know that our organization is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders. Through our programs, we provide essential resources, mentorship, and opportunities for young people to develop their skills and actively contribute to society. We believe that empowering youth is vital for creating a more equitable and sustainable future, and we are committed to supporting them on this journey.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is an essential part of growth. One of the most significant risks I took was initiating the Model Commonwealth Summit. It involved considerable uncertainty—would young people engage? Would the summit resonate? By stepping outside my comfort zone and challenging the status quo, I not only succeeded in creating a dialogue among youth but also inspired others to join the movement “to inspire policy and action”.
