Exploring Life & Business with Lindsey Donohue of Moxie Park Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Donohue.

Hi Lindsey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I went straight into cosmetology after high school, starting my career at just 18. I began as a booth rental stylist which, looking back, wasn’t the easiest path. My clientele consisted mostly of friends and family, but instead of leaving during slow hours, I stayed. I watched. I listened. I learned. Being fresh out of school and surrounded by seasoned stylists was a gift, and that’s where I truly began to refine my craft.

Four years in, I moved to Charleston to completely restart my career. This time, I chose a commission salon, placing myself once again in an environment where learning was constant. I absorbed everything I could from the talented stylists around me. By the end of my first year, I had built a clientele I loved but I wanted more.

That’s when I began training new stylists and working closely with assistants. Teaching became a passion I didn’t expect but quickly fell in love with. For seven years, I started mentoring others, helping them grow in both skill and confidence.

Eventually, I wanted to create something of my own and that’s how Moxie Park was born. A collective of stylists united by one purpose: to learn, grow, and truly love this industry

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle was choosing between staying comfortable or stepping out on my own to build something bigger. It’s easy to rely on what you know and only worry about yourself. It’s a completely different responsibility to care for a team of nearly 20 people.

It’s a big, scary commitment but comfort doesn’t lead to growth. If you stay where it’s safe, you’ll never become what you’re capable of.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We built Moxie Park on the belief that great hair starts with great people — a community of stylists who love what we do and always strive to be the best in our craft. As Charleston’s top destination for haircuts, color, blonding, keratin treatments, and extensions, our mission is simple: deliver elevated services and exceed every guest’s expectations. We’re passionate about education, creativity, and taking care of our community.

How do you define success?
I believe success as a business owner is measured by how your employees speak about you and how they live their day-to-day work lives. If they enjoy coming to work, earn great money, have time to spend with the people they love, and still find reasons to laugh throughout the day, that’s success.

Moxie Park was built for the stylists. We wouldn’t be who we are without them.
