Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Hix.
Hi Kim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
First, I am a wife of 29 yrs & mom of two. I can’t remember a time growing up when I wasn’t outside doing something, riding bikes, walking, playing in the woods or jumping on the trampoline. I was a cheerleader and played baseball on a boys team. When I was 14 I went to a gym with my mom “Living Well Lady” & I have been in a gym ever since. Through college I joined a gym & got my workouts in daily. Exercise & good nutrition have been a constant or should I say obsession my entire life.
I have been a certified Personal Trainer since 2004. This is my 3rd career & my passion, following careers in the mental health & legal fields. I received my BS in Psychology from Lander College & later AD in Paralegal studies. During those other careers I did coaching on the side. After my last job, as a Patient and family liaison with the Greenville Hospital System, started out as a beautiful & fulfilling job, turned into a nightmare, I made the decision to go full time with just coaching (already doing it part time as well)
After 10+ yrs training in a “Globo gym” I took a leap of faith along with 2 friends to go out on my own & tag along as they began work building their new gym, in Mauldin & that decision has been one of the best decisions of my life. Every day I love going to my all day playground to help my clients and friends. It has been a true blessing.
My goal is to help people reach their health, fitness & life goals in a real, sincere, authentic & honest way with Team Kim Fitness Exercise & Nutritional coaching. As a professional Personal Trainer & health coach my passion is to guide people towards a healthier lifestyle. Everyone is unique & I treat each person as the individual that they are. I do not use catch all programming. Each person gets tailored workouts customized to THEM, their goals, fitness level, abilities & needs. My method is to build a custom plan based on the individual’s health, experience, budget, time and other factors, most importantly, fitness goals, & teaching proper nutrition. My clients enjoy a different workout every time they train with me. No client has EVER repeated the same workout twice, and they enjoy that variety. I hope to encourage, motivate, guide and teach each person on their fitness and health journey, so they are able to take the skills and knowledge out on their own. I make it fun. I have clients that have been with me for 4,6,8 years.
I have been a certified Personal trainer since 2004, Crossfit instructor, Certified Nutrition Counselor, Medical Fitness Trainer, Youth Fitness Instructor USA Olympic certified, Transformation Specialist & DNA testing coach. I competed in my first Figure competition in 2014 at the age of 48. I now have 17 competitions under my belt, 14 National Qualifying wins and 3 National events.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly it has been a pretty smooth road. I simply love exercise, learning new modalities and theory, meeting new ppl and having the opportunity to help them to help themselves. When you love what you do so much, there are few bad days. When I went out on my own, and I remember the exact date, August 8, 2016, every minute of the day. When I made my first post to Facebook letting friends know I left my longtime gym employee & was now free to work with anyone, and starting my own business, literally in less than 24 hrs I had 12 clients. I was dumbfounded Had I known there would be this kind of response I would have gone out on my own long before. However, the gym I worked for did not allow us to do any kind of work whatsoever outside of their walls, that’s another story. This new chapter in my life was made available to me because luckily my coworkers were planning to open their own gym, & asked if I was interested in coming along, an opportunity I jumped on, without hesitation, Tri Fit Barbell, thriving now in Mauldin. I was nervous, worried, but felt so free & excited to be doing what I had longed to do. I have been very fortunate that people come to me, I guess because I’ve been around here so long, word of mouth mostly, some Facebook or Google, but I haven’t done any marketing or advertising.
We’ve been impressed with Team Kim Fitness exercise and nutritional coaching , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think my honesty, my ability to connect with people easily and find common ground, empathize. I have been doing this a long time and been through a lot myself, so I can understand, especially women, and their frustrations. I have acquired quite a bit of knowledge and approach nutrition and fitness different than many in this industry (so I’m told) and I think people find that refreshing. I don’t advocate diets. I teach real nutrition, not media hype or false quick fixes. I’m not here to keep selling them, I’m here to teach so they can go out and continue a healthy lifestyle on their own. A person should not have to keep paying me or any coach forever, unless they want to and need the accountability and enjoy it, not because they feel like they can’t live a healthy lifestyle without them (the trainer). My clients stay because they want to, they get continuous knowledge about health and nutrition weekly from me, facts, tips, recipes, encouragement, and someone that cares.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Christmas at my grandparents house in Charleston with my cousins. It was wonderful.
