Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Birchenough
Hi Katherine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Several years ago when I was working as an Emergency Medicine and Urgent Care physician I felt like I was losing control of my health, and I didn’t know why. My work days (and nights) were full of patients with the same issues I had: unexplained fatigue, mood swings, aches and pains, and generally just not enjoying life anymore. I was too young to feel like that! So were they. I tried, but at that time I didn’t have the tools I needed to help them, or even help myself!
I sought answers from trusted colleagues, met some new mentors along the way, and eventually learned a different way of practicing medicine. What I needed was a whole new toolbox, and that’s what I found in Functional Medicine. I spent 3 years (and a lot of money) getting trained and ultimately certified through IFM. But I didn’t stop thre! I’ve since done more training, becoming an expert in hormone management, regenerative medicine, and longevity medicine. With these tools, I can approach almost any health challenge with a fresh perspective. I now have a much deeper understanding of health and how to regain and maintain it. I feel better today than I ever thought I could again. I’m happier and more fulfilled. Most importantly, I feel like I can really help my patients!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Once I committed myself to the training program, it went pretty smoothly. However, my biggest hurdle was overcoming “imposter syndrome”. It took years of training and seeing patients to feel like I knew enough to practice medicine this way! I had to go back and re-learn things differently. My entire mindset shifted into a more patient-focused and holistic way of thinking through a problem. Fortunately, despite giving up a very lucrative job in the ER, my husband supported me and allowed me to change the trajectory of my career. Now we own a very busy practice together doing what we love.
