Today we’d like to introduce you to John Fuss
Hi John, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was originally born in the Philippines, but we moved stateside in 1988 and ended up in South Carolina in 89. We moved to Fort Mill the summer of 89 and I remember Hugo the hurricane that September.
I graduated from Fort Mill high school and after a semester at York technical college decided to make the move down to Charleston.
I started full-time guiding in 2010 and I am currently in my 15th full-time season.
But guiding has been in my blood as long as I can remember. Even as a young kid, I would spend a lot of time by myself, figuring out what would make fish bite and how to catch them. Being unable to keep the information to myself I would invite anyone willing and excitedly show them what I had learned.
I’ve never been able to keep the gifts of the world to myself and today I’m able to share it with my little boy, my friends, and my clients while making a living and a life. It’s really created something special.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has never been particularly smooth. Smooth stretches, yes, ditches on both sides that I have found myself in from time to time, and bumpy portions. Not unlike anyone else’s road I suppose.
It’s all a matter of perception and something I never took into consideration years ago.
Today, no matter the circumstance, I can view everything as a gift and I definitely owe that to being in recovery. It’s been a life changer..
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Holy City Fishing Charters?
Holy City Fishing Charters offers guided fishing charters in the Charleston area.
It is just me, and these days occasionally, my little boy joins me as a mate.
Our focus is shallow water live bait fishing with a lot of action that really suits most people, especially families with the kids.
I am most proud of creating a soft spoken and enjoyable atmosphere where people can make mistakes, learn about the natural environment in which they are in, catch fish, and even further learn to clean them as well as get inspired about different ways of cooking what we are gifted with from the water.
The entire world can often seem to be breathing down necks. This is the one place where being 100% authentic is OK. Nature doesn’t care what you look like who you love, your occupation… so come, make mistakes, be you… and celebrate that.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find somebody who has what you want in life, and hold them close.
