Exploring Life & Business with Greg Handal of Water Music Charters of Folly Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Handal.

Hi Greg, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started Water Music Charters in 1999 when I was a special education teacher in the Charleson County Public School District. I operated my charter business full time during the summer months and during the school year I operated on weekends as well as providing sunset sails during the week. I built my business over the years marketing on my own, figuring out the internet, etc. I concentrate on building relationships by treating people well. I am humbled that over half of my business is repeat and referral. I absolutely love what I do, and I am blessed to be able to do it. I retired from teaching in 2021 and now the charter business is my only job. I operate in the warm months and sail to the Bahamas in the cold months. For more details, I wrote a blog about how I started sailing and chartering: https://www.watermusiccharters.com/post/son-of-a-son-in-law-of-a-sailor

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been mostly smooth, but marketing has always been a challenge. In over 26 years, marketing has changed dramatically and continues to do so. I am always learning and I feel like I’m always playing catch up.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I offer daysailing charters customized to individual desires. All trips are private and I try to make certain everyone has a great time. I enjoy sharing my tales of sailing throughout the years. I’ve been doing sailing charters longer than anyone in Folly Beach, and probably longer than anyone in the Charleson regional area. I pride myself in creating memorable experiences for everyone, particularly celebrants: bachelorette, birthday, graduation, etc. I stay in contact with hundreds of my clients through social media and repeat visits. I have groups that have been sailing with me for over twenty years. I cherish my relationships and it helps me thrive personally and professionally. My trips are fun, safe and comfortable. I don’t think I’d have been in business this long if that were not the case.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My wife has been supportive from day one and I enjoy coming home and telling her about my trips. My biggest cheerleaders are my clients who repeatedly sail and send new clients my way. I’m blessed to have them and appreciate them more than they could ever know.
