Exploring Life & Business with Genea Johnson of Radiant Point Acupuncture and Wellness Clinic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Genea Johnson.

Hi Genea, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into Chinese Medicine was not a willing one, at least not initially. I was already a licensed massage therapist, but after a series of car accidents left me recovering for six months, I questioned whether I could even return to the profession. My body was in chronic pain, and my emotional state was fragile. During that period of prayer and uncertainty, something strange happened: when I resumed working, my clients started suggesting, almost unanimously, that I look into becoming an acupuncturist. Suddenly, I was seeing ads for schools—it felt less like coincidence and more like destiny.

I researched Chinese Medicine, visited a school in Asheville, NC, and immediately knew that was where I was supposed to be. I fell completely in love with the philosophy and the medicine. The core principle—that “Where there is free flow, there is no pain; where there is no free flow, there is pain”—provided the framework I needed, allowing me to go deeper into the issues that caused my clients pain and tension. I began my acupuncture career in North Augusta, GA, at an established integrative clinic before returning home to Columbia to launch my own practice. Following the birth of my child, I am now enthusiastically re-establishing my practice in Columbia, SC to serve the community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The transition from a focused practitioner to a business owner was my steepest learning curve. I was so immersed in becoming a knowledgeable clinician, that I didn’t initially grasp the daily requirements of being a successful entrepreneur. This manifested in two main hurdles: financial strategy and visibility. Starting without significant financial backing meant every spending decision, especially in advertising, had to be highly strategic. The adage that it takes money to make money certainly rang true. Secondly, while I’m personable one-on-one, I naturally tend to avoid being center stage. When you are the face of your business, you must learn to put yourself out there, which was a challenging adjustment. Growing a profitable business can be a strain. Ultimately, though, through every struggle, the motivation remains simple: all I ever knew was that I had a gift and a passion, and I wanted to share it with the world to help people.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our business, Radiant Point Acupuncture and Wellness Clinic, specializes in Chinese Medicine, focusing on pain—whether it is emotional or physical—and the auxiliary therapies that support healing. Our paramount purpose is to educate and help our community take control of their healthcare journey.

What truly sets us apart in Columbia is the integrated perspective I bring to every treatment. My background of over 10 years as a licensed massage therapist gives me a unique, tactile understanding of the body’s tissues and tension patterns. I approach every patient with this hands-on diagnostic knowledge, which allows me to select acupuncture points and modalities with heightened precision, resulting in more profound and lasting physical shifts.

We specifically specialize in treating the true root cause of imbalance. While emotional stress often manifests physically, the reverse is also true: functional dysfunction within the body, whether poor digestion, inflammation, or hormonal issues, can create physical pain and emotional distress. We treat this whole spectrum, providing relief by addressing the physiological and the emotional roots simultaneously.

Brand-wise, I am proud that we are a clinic dedicated to being a force for positive work and healing. Our paramount purpose is client empowerment. We view ourselves as your trusted partner and a collaborative team member, ensuring you walk away with actionable tools to take control of your own wellness journey.

This commitment to empowerment is reflected in our structured, client-centric process. At Radiant Point Acupuncture and Wellness Clinic, we begin with The Initial Complementary Appointment, a dedicated session to eliminate the guesswork and fully understand your unique health narrative and goals. This moves seamlessly into Your Personalized Health Strategy, where you partner with your practitioner to co-create a hyper-tailored treatment plan, a tailored strategy built specifically for your needs. The ultimate outcome is achieving The Empowerment Outcome: moving beyond temporary symptom relief to experience profound, sustained vitality and’ renewed confidence in your long-term health.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My success is truly a team effort built on the support of many people.

Family Foundations: My mother, Audrey, has been a lifelong encourager, instilling in me a strong work ethic, the importance of education, and a sense of pride in all that I do. Both she and my grandmother, Geneva, modeled selflessness and the commitment to helping others. My late Uncle Thomas made sure that I made it through acupuncture school. Crucially, my partner, William, has secured our household throughout this entrepreneurial journey, and I am forever grateful for his steadfast support.

Educational Mentors: I was fortunate to learn the complexities of Chinese Medicine from incredible role models, including Mrs. Kathleen Leavy, Shannon Gonzalez, and Dr. Khalid Shakoor and the late Dr. Benjamin Watson and Dr. Shen. Their dedication to teaching thoroughness and clinical depth profoundly shaped me as a practitioner.

Business & Mindset Mentors: My business mentor, Mel Flaming of SCORE, was invaluable in teaching me the fundamentals of being a successful businesswoman. Darrell Booker believed in my business and helped secure its future through critical support at ClimbFund. Dr. Rosanna Saladin patiently guided me through shifting my mindset, helping me understand the tenets of treating and respecting the business as its own separate entity.

Peer & Colleague Network: I am also deeply indebted to my network of friends and massage and acupuncture colleagues, past and present—including Patrice Williams, Courtney Howse-Louallen, LMT, Llewelyn Walters, Kenneth Noble, L.Ac, MAOM, Savannah Byrd, LMT, Dr Brittany Epps, DACM, MSOM, L.Ac, Dr. Monica Hilton DACM, MSOM, L.Ac, LaBrasha Moore, Dr. Felicia Walker and Mrs. Debbie Walker, Tracy Jacox-Gunter, and Dr. Bill Skelton D.Ac—who have all lent their time, efforts, and ways of being that have profoundly influenced who I am as a business leader and entrepreneur.
