Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Sherwood Miler of Miler Orthodontics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sherwood Miler

Hi Dr. Sherwood, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Dr. Miler, a proud native of the Lowcountry, embodies a deep-rooted commitment to exceptional orthodontic care. As a board-certified orthodontist and diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, he combines his expertise with a passion for helping and caring for others—a passion he developed from an early age while growing up in a large family in South Carolina.
First, his academic journey commenced at the College of Charleston, where he distinguished himself by graduating in the top 4% with highest honors in biology. Furthermore, Dr. Miler’s pursuit of excellence continued at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine, where he earned his doctorate in dentistry. Plus, his exceptional aptitude in clinical dentistry garnered multiple awards, culminating in the prestigious United States Navy Health Professions Scholarship.
Embracing a call to serve, Dr. Miler dedicated four impactful years as a Lieutenant and active duty general dentist in the Navy, stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. However, his unwavering dedication and outstanding performance led to his selection for an extensive three-year Orthodontic specialty residency at the Georgia School of Orthodontics in Atlanta. During his residency, Dr. Miler augmented his expertise with an additional fellowship in clear aligner therapy. Plus, in his final year in Georgia, he served as a doctor at a private practice orthodontic office, delivering quality and efficient care to the local community.
However, with a steadfast commitment to his community, Dr. Miler established his private practices in Beaufort and Bluffton (Miler Orthodontics), bringing premier orthodontic care to the lowcountry.
Furthermore, as a specialist in orthodontics, Dr. Miler offers comprehensive services tailored to patients of all ages, including early interceptive, adolescent, and adult orthodontic treatments, encompassing both traditional braces and clear aligners. He takes pride in delivering transformative results while prioritizing patient comfort and satisfaction.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Miler finds fulfillment in his roles as a devoted husband to Margaret and a proud father to two exceptional sons, all enriched by the companionship of their playful golden retriever. However, when not crafting radiant smiles, he delights in quality family time, sports, and the splendor of the great outdoors.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey to becoming a board-certified orthodontist has been rewarding but not without challenges. Growing up in a large family in the Lowcountry of South Carolina instilled in me the values of hard work and resilience.

Balancing rigorous academics at the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina while striving for excellence required dedication. Serving as a Lieutenant in the Navy brought its own set of challenges.

My intense three-year orthodontic residency in Atlanta pushed me professionally, but the knowledge I gained, especially in clear aligner therapy, was invaluable. Acquiring my own practices in Beaufort and Bluffton was a leap of faith that demanded time and effort, but my passion for delivering premier orthodontic care kept me motivated.

Each struggle has shaped my commitment to my patients and community. Balancing my professional life with being a husband and father adds its own challenges, but my family is my greatest support, and I cherish every moment with them.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Many people might be surprised to learn that, despite being a board-certified orthodontist, I have a deep appreciation for general dentistry. While it’s common for orthodontists to transition to their specialty because they weren’t fond of general dentistry, my journey has been quite the opposite. I genuinely enjoy the foundational aspects of dentistry and the diverse range of patient care it offers.

My early experiences as a general dentist in the Navy taught me the importance of comprehensive oral health and patient relationships. This background enhances my approach to orthodontics, allowing me to consider the overall well-being of my patients as I work to create beautiful smiles. I believe that a strong foundation in general dentistry informs my practice and ultimately benefits my patients.
