Hi Cara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was a kid that always loved technology and tinkering with computer components when they unexpectedly failed. I can remember taking off the computer cover and investigating what could have possibly gone wrong with the physical components if my software troubleshooting didn’t resolve the issue. That desire was always present, so when I went to college I decided to study computer engineering. I worked in corporate America for over a decade primarily as a computer engineer and cybersecurity engineer. During that time family and friends would occasionally ask me to develop a website for them. I enjoyed the process of using my technology skills to bring an idea to life, which was also helping someone to grow and reach their goal.
This led to my friend Shay and I joining forces to start our own company. We are two computer engineers with a combined experience of over 20 years in the tech field. We founded ShaCa Gurus® in January 2021, driven by a passion to use our expertise to help our friends, family, and now a wider audience. Our decision to become small business owners stemmed from a desire to offer affordable, high-quality web solutions, especially to small minority businesses and nonprofit organizations. “ShaCa Gurus” combines our names, heritage, and a nod to our home state, South Carolina. It embodies our commitment to empowering businesses with digital tools for growth, highlighting our journey from professionals to entrepreneurs dedicated to making technology accessible for underrepresented business sectors.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Completing my B.S. in computer engineering has been one of my most challenging obstacles. Navigating life away from home as a young adult was not easy. I had to quickly learn how to discipline myself. I also had to swallow my pride and ask for help from many professors, mentors, and friends. Juggling all the fun that comes with college while remaining focused on the end goal was no easy feat. This little girl from Lake City had a lot to learn!
One of my biggest challenges as an entrepreneur is gaining the trust of new clients that did not have a pleasant experience with a previous provider. My goal is to help make their life easier. Therefore, it’s important to understand what went wrong and develop a better way forward to ensure they don’t have a similar experience again. Clear communication helps alleviate their past grievances and establishes a wealth of trust in our partnership moving forward.
