Today we’d like to introduce you to Camila Sanchez.
Hi Camila, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, it started when I was a little girl watching my Mom put on her Mary Kay, and I would steal her makeup palettes and samples out of her kit. I always loved playing around with makeup, and I was lucky enough to have parents who let me express that part of me at a young age when I had friends who had to sneak their makeup and wipe it away before going home after school. After 30 years of doing my own makeup and doom scrolling an unimaginable amount of tutorials and get ready with me’s, I finally decided to take the plunge and dive into something I was actually passionate about. I started the esthetics program at Kenneth Shuler in June 2025, graduated with honors at the end of January 2026, passed my state board exams and received my esthetician license by March! I want to specialize in bridal makeup, and I finally got my first bride recently. It was very validating and felt great to finally be doing what I was meant to do. Aside from bridal, I would love to do any and all kinds of makeup! I can go from clean girl & natural to full glam! That’s the part I love about makeup. It’s so versatile, and I want to learn all of it! It feels good to help others feel confident and beautiful, no matter what style they’re into.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I think it’s very unrealistic to expect to reach your dreams and goals without bumps along the way. We all have to learn through trial and error, and not all of us are blessed to be born into wealth. Everything I have, I have had to work for. When you hear people talk about going to cosmetology school or esthetician school, it sounds like it’s something that could be really easy, but there were a lot of challenges. For the makeup aspect, school didn’t teach me anything beyond what I already knew. I am mostly self-taught in that area. I think most makeup artists are these days. The younger generation is lucky to have the world in the palm of their hands and endless tutorials to watch on every platform. I had to go through my ugly duckling phase and learn by playing around with what I had available, then YouTube blossomed and helped me a great deal. Getting started after graduating from school has definitely been the most challenging part. The supplies you need to start a makeup kit is astronomical in costs, not to mention the costs of getting an LLC, insurance and a trademark for security. Thank God for tax write-offs! This is also a very competitive field, so there’s an overwhelming amount of artists commenting on every post trying to secure clientele. You have to really put yourself out there, and it’s scary easy to get stagnant. However, I feel grateful to live in Charleston where it is the number one wedding destination in the U.S. It truly is amazing to see how many people are in search of makeup artists on a daily basis. Lastly, aside from being an entrepreneur, I am also a Mom to three beautiful boys, so you can imagine the amount of juggling I do on a daily basis! All in all, I wouldn’t trade it for the world! It gets overwhelming fast, but I have a wonderful village who pushes me to keep going when it gets tough. I’m forever thankful. I couldn’t do this without them.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ready, Set, Glow is my esthetics business, and I specialize in bridal or event makeup! I can do a little bit of everything and am always up for a challenge, so I don’t want to keep myself in just one area of expertise when it comes to makeup. I think that’s what sets me apart from other artists. I see the vision, and I am determined to make it happen even if it’s beyond my comfort zone. I’m learning to live outside of that comfort zone, and that is where you truly grow in this industry. I’m very proud of landing this interview, executing my first solo prom and bridal makeup that I did recently, and for making big girl purchases to secure my brand name. Nothing feels better than getting that first paying job and most importantly, seeing your clients eyes glisten and glow with confidence when they finally look in that mirror! For someone who hasn’t worked in any industry outside food & bev, I’m off to a great start, so I’m very proud of myself for getting this far already. I learned a lot in school that I carry into my work. As a licensed esthetician, I can ensure client safety and help them feel at ease knowing their artist is hygienic and educated. Infection control is a big deal in the beauty world, and not many people understand that. There’s a lot of freelance artists who don’t have the education that I have, & that can be a bit scary. Besides that, another huge part of makeup is skin prep, and I am an expert in all things skin! I can offer a regimen clients can carry with them throughout their life well after their big day is over. You won’t sit in my chair and get makeup without good conversation and a lot of random advice regarding your skin and makeup routine. I love to share what I know with my clients, and that just shows how much I care for and love my craft!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is built on many things including motivation, determination, PASSION and the dreaded short comings, failure and trial and error. Living outside of your comfort zone is how you become successful. I will die on that hill!
