Exploring Life & Business with Ashley Felder of Pilates of Forest Acres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Felder.

Hi Ashley, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got certified in Pilates in Northern California in 2000.
Upon moving back to South Carolina in 2007, I promptly opened up Pilates of Forest Acres.
My work with clients tends to be on a more therapeutic level, as I want to help people find balance and efficiency of movement in their bodies. I also incorporate Thai bodywork in my sessions. I find the two modalities arevery complementary in helping achieve my goals with clients.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles of being a manager and a teacher can be difficult at times.

You have to do the business part and then turn around and be the compassionate teacher.

Also, Pilates has exploded. Is this a good thing? It’s nice that it is now recognized, however, a lot of of these studios do not understand the origins or the concepts. A lot of times people will just be “working out” or teaching a workout on the Pilates equipment. They have not taken the time to learn the concepts and the depth of the work.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Pilates of Forest Acres?
I was originally trained in classical Pilates. But because I am a dancer, I have studied many somatic modalities and chose not to stick with the Classical method. While out in California for 15 years, I studied with a lot of luminaries who taught me so much about the body and movement. All of this learning has enabled me to have a large toolbox.
Each client has different needs and that’s what I like to address in my sessions.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like that it is fairly inexpensive to live. The people are generally nice. I missed the manners out in California!
I feel like we all get along better than the media makes us out.
I do not like the Summer’s here. At all.
