Exploring Life & Business with Andrew Van Kirk of Carolina Detail Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Van Kirk.

Hi Andrew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Carolina Detail Co. began in 2017 with a simple idea: treat every vehicle with the same care and attention you would give your own. What started as a small, hands-on operation built on hard work and word-of-mouth quickly grew into one of the most trusted detailing companies in the Charleston area.

From the beginning, the focus was never just on cleaning cars—it was about delivering an experience. By combining meticulous craftsmanship, premium products, and a commitment to customer service, Carolina Detail Co. earned a reputation for quality that helped the company grow steadily year after year.

As demand increased, so did the scope of services. What began as a detailing business expanded into ceramic coatings, marine detailing, mobile services, and climate-controlled vehicle storage. Today, Carolina Detail Co. serves car enthusiasts, collectors, and everyday drivers who want their vehicles cared for at the highest level.

Growth has been driven by a simple philosophy: do exceptional work, build real relationships with customers, and never cut corners. That mindset has allowed Carolina Detail Co. to expand to multiple locations while maintaining the same attention to detail that defined the company from day one.

Now, as the company continues to grow—including expanding facilities and acquiring other detailing businesses—the mission remains the same: raise the standard for vehicle care in the Lowcountry and continue delivering a level of service that customers can trust.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most small businesses, the journey hasn’t always been easy. Carolina Detail Co. was built from the ground up, and in the early days every step forward came with its own set of challenges—from long hours and tight resources to learning how to scale a service-based business while maintaining the quality that customers expected.

One of the biggest hurdles was growth itself. As demand for services increased, the team faced the challenge of expanding operations without compromising the level of care and attention that had built the company’s reputation in the first place. Finding and training the right team members, investing in equipment, and developing systems that could support a growing customer base required constant adaptation.

The business also navigated unpredictable market conditions, including the economic uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. Like many service businesses, it required quick thinking, flexibility, and a commitment to pushing forward even when the path ahead wasn’t always clear.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Carolina Detail Co?

I started Carolina Detail Co. with a pretty simple mindset: take care of people’s vehicles the way I would want mine taken care of. Over the years that philosophy has grown into a full-service automotive and marine care company serving the Charleston area. We specialize in high-end detailing, ceramic coatings, and marine detailing, but one of the areas we’ve really become known for—and what we’re continuing to build around—is **secure, climate-controlled vehicle storage**.

Charleston has a lot of car enthusiasts, collectors, and seasonal residents who own special vehicles but don’t always have the space or the right environment to store them properly. That’s where we come in. Our storage program is designed to be much more than just a place to park a car. We provide a clean, climate-controlled facility where vehicles are stored safely, maintained properly, and cared for by people who genuinely appreciate them. Many of the cars we store are collector vehicles, exotics, classics, or weekend cars that owners want protected from humidity, weather, and long periods of inactivity.

Because we’re a detailing company as well, we’re able to offer a level of care that most storage facilities simply can’t. Vehicles can be maintained, detailed, coated, or prepared whenever the owner needs them. If someone flies into town for the weekend, their car can be cleaned, ready, and waiting for them. If it’s going back into storage, we make sure it’s protected and properly maintained.

What I’m most proud of brand-wise is the trust we’ve built. A lot of our clients are handing us vehicles that mean a lot to them—sometimes financially, sometimes personally—and that’s not something we take lightly. Our growth has largely come from word of mouth and relationships with people who know we’ll take care of their vehicles the right way.

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: create the kind of place where car owners know their vehicles are safe, protected, and cared for by people who truly understand them.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the things I love most about Charleston is the sense of community here. It’s a city that has grown a lot over the years, but it still manages to feel like a place where relationships matter. People genuinely support local businesses, and there’s a strong culture of entrepreneurship here.

Charleston also has a unique pace and lifestyle that’s hard to find elsewhere. Whether it’s being near the water, the history of the city, or the outdoor lifestyle, it’s just a great place to live and raise a family.

Like any fast-growing city, though, Charleston definitely has its challenges. The rapid growth has brought things like increased traffic and infrastructure that’s still catching up with the number of people moving here. Sometimes it feels like the city is growing faster than it can adapt.
