Daily Inspiration: Meet Robert Lange

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Lange.

Hi Robert, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Absolutely. Over 20 years ago, Megan and I were two young artists with a dream and a lot of passion (and no money). We took a leap of faith and opened Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, with the goal of creating a space that supported not just our work, but the work of other artist friends as well. From day one, we’ve been focused on building a gallery that understands both the artist’s and the gallery’s perspective—because we’ve lived both.

Over the years, our gallery has grown into a thriving hub representing over 20 incredible artists, and it’s become a cornerstone of the Charleston arts scene. What keeps us going is the sense of community we’ve built—this gallery feels like a family. We’ve expanded our programming, launched a scholarship to support emerging artists, and continually pushed ourselves to evolve. It’s been a journey of artistic passion, mentorship, and community, and we’re excited for what the next chapter holds.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We’ve definitely weathered some storms – but every challenge has helped shape who we are today. Like many small businesses, we’ve faced some incredibly tough moments. The recession in 2008 hit not long after we opened, and of course, the impact of COVID-19 brought its own set of challenges for the art world and our community.

We’ve also experienced the personal side of loss—over the years, we’ve lost a number of artists who meant so much to us and to the gallery. Those moments were deeply painful and reminded us just how much this space is about people, not just paintings on walls.

But through it all, we’ve leaned into what matters most: supporting our artists, staying connected to our community, and continuing to show up for the work we love. The road hasn’t been easy, but it’s been meaningful—and we’re incredibly grateful for every step of it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a painter, and my work has always centered around realism with a bit of a whimsical or surreal twist. I love exploring the space where technical precision meets imagination—where a painting can be both grounded and dreamlike at the same time. I’m probably best known for pieces that feature unexpected elements in otherwise realistic settings—things that make you pause, smile, or ask a question.

What I’m most proud of is the fact that I’ve been able to stay curious in my work. After all these years, I still wake up excited to paint, to experiment, to challenge myself. I think that drive to keep growing is what sets me apart. I never want to paint the same thing twice—I want each piece to be better, more thoughtful, more layered than the last.

And more than anything, I’m proud that my art has created connections—with collectors, with fellow artists, and with the community we’ve built through the gallery. Painting is a personal journey, but it’s also this beautiful bridge to the world around me.
