Daily Inspiration: Meet Nigel Butler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nigel Butler

Hi Nigel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be an actor. Over time, that passion extended to other aspects of filmmaking. It was the Lord’s doing that my brother, Stewart, developed a love for cinematography, editing, and directing–skills that complement my own focus on acting, writing, and directing. There’s overlap, but never in a competitive way. In fact, it felt like a perfect partnership.

In 2020, we had the concept and scripts for a sitcom in mind, and we realized that to retain creative control, we would need our own production company. Due to this, we launched Butler Media Productions LLC and immediately began work on Season 1 of our sitcom, “Problems Higher Up”. It premiered on streaming platforms in January 2021 and marked a major milestone in my acting career.

As of 2024, our company has produced multiple films, music videos, and digital media projects. Most recently, on September 29, 2024, we released Season 3 of “Problems Higher Up”, a proud continuation of the work we started.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t like to think of setbacks in the traditional sense. I could list a lot of them off here but that doesn’t seem helpful. I look at them as learning experiences. Problems that need to be resolved and obstacles to overcome. I owe a lot to my brother and the others in our circles who have been there for us through it all, but ultimately, it’s the Lord I trust. He has seen us through a lot and for that I’m grateful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our company Butler Media Productions is known for Film and Television primarily. I think the project that I’m most proud of, that’s currently released and available to watch is a little conspiracy, thriller film called, “The Surveyors”. It was filmed around the Greenville, SC area and has a really unique story about a character, that I get to play, who gets pulled into this underground world of…well…basically crime- a shady underworld scene. It’s not quite like anything else I’ve personally seen, and I think it has some distinct world building that helps it to stand out. But there are so many projects we’ve done and every one of them has its own value. The very accomplishment of 3 seasons is crazy to me, for a show that we had initially thought, failed on arrival. We did a very nontraditional Christmas film titled, “A Very Special Christmas Show” which is a collection of holiday stories throughout a 50-minute TV movie. I’m pretty pleased with that one. All and all, I’d say what sets us apart is the fact that when you get to the credits of the film, you’re most likely going to see Stewart Butler, John Steadman, and Me doing a lot of the pre and post-production work, and a good bit of production too. Those guys are great to work with and it makes the entire process very enjoyable.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We have a marvelous time filming in South Carolina. There’s a lovely community here in this state. We often work with John Steadman, over at Steadman Video Productions. He’s a fantastic creative who really knows how to make the vision happen. We’re very blessed to have met him, there are dozens of other tremendous artists we’ve gotten the pleasure of working with over the years and projects. From our family-friendly sitcom “Problems Higher Up” to our upcoming western and high school films, we love exploring different styles. I’m just looking forward to finding out what’s next.
