Today we’d like to introduce you to Moses Nyagota.
Hi Moses, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
l relocated to South Africa from my home country Zimbabwe 10 years ago to look for greener pastures. l was working at a construction company that does different works like constructing new buildings and doing maintenance on high voltage pylon lines or substations. In my line of work I enjoyed it. The goal was to raise money for college. Unfortunately l worked all these years got a lot off experience but never got paid. l was left without hope but l had to keep going.
In January 2024 a friend of mine reached out to me with an opportunity to go and do voluntary work in a ship. l looked up to it and it was worth it to apply, in my mind l told myself its better to do goodwill as l grow older, l discover that l have two hands, one for helping myself, the other for helping others. At a time in my life when l was losing hope, having given up my unpaid job due to challenging circumstances, l was very grateful for this opportunity. The ships travel all over the world sharing knowledge help and hope with the people of the world. l signed up for 4 weeks as a port volunteer. it was a good experience to work with 70 different nationalizes doing different works in different parts of South Africa. There were different challenges doings this. Seeing how God had been faithful through the ups and downs, and recognizing how l had personally grown since being on board, l then then considered joining as a long-term crewmember for close to 3 years. My dream when l was struggling these past years was to continue to be a travel photography. Now l travel in many parts of the world as a volunteer serving in the engine room. That never limited my dream, l take pictures wherever l go and share with the rest of the world. As well l share my story and give hope to the broken world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
it has been ups and downs. Most of the time it has been smooth
The most challenging part was getting into countries were people are struggling. People that don’t have basic needs for example clean drinking water. Trying to find a way to help them and giving them some encouragement. This taught me to be grateful with what l have.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a volunteer. Profession; Engine Rated Watchkeeper for ships or yachts. So far l have only worked in one ship.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Our main office for the books that we sell in our ship is in Florence, South Carolina. It’s like home to me.
