Daily Inspiration: Meet Mike Phelan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Phelan.

Hi Mike, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Resilience would be the only way to describe it. I was born and raised in New Jersey. Obstacles and overcoming started as early as age 4. I saw domestic abuse, mental illness, and addiction growing up. School was no real refuge for me. I spent a lot of my time day dreaming in class, which earned me a spot in the resource room. So not only did I get picked on in my household but also at school. Sports were one of my only outlets. However, the competition was not only on the playing field but also the household for praise, acknowledgment, or an at a boy. Things were never good enough and I could always be better. Some of my biggest influences in my life held a special title, Marine and I aspired to be something that stood out and different. My happiness came from some interesting yet disturbing avenues like cutting, pain from sports, and eventually substance. September 11th was my senior year of high school and I would like to say I enlisted in the Marine Corps for patriotism. But, the honestly I wanted out of my house, town, to be different, and my at a boy. I saw many places, learned many things, saw combat, and served my country honorably. Sure the Marine Corps helped me and set me up in so many ways but combat on the battlefield was way easier than the attacks everyday civilian life has on a daily basis. When I got out of the Marine Corps, I walked on an played college football at a small division three school, I earned two degrees in three years, I met my future wife, and I got a first hand account of the greedy college system. Unlike, the Marine Corps where you had individuals who had your back, in civilian life it was dog eat dog. Also in those three years of college I was victim to a violent assault on of all days, Veterans Day. One year to the date I lost my father to a mysterious work accident. Drug use became more prevalent and I barely made it out of college. Once I graduated I headed out west to California where I learned how to work on wind turbines and solar panels. I went back into education and in the ten years I worked in California I worked my way up from a classroom aide, to long term sub, to program advisor, to teacher mentor, to site coordinator. In that time I earned my masters degree, had two children(one of which we almost lost at birth), ruined my marriage, and lived a double life as an addict. My addiction got so bad I found myself separated and digging myself out of a huge hole. Unlike most couples who got divorced during COVID I got back together with my wife. Unlike most people who fell further into addiction during COVID I got sober. it wasn’t until I walked on in my brother dead from a drug overdose did I realize I wanted a change and moved to the Charleston area. I continued in education, got into coaching, I am in therapy, sobriety, building back my relationship with my wife and children, a work in progress, and just recently became an author. My dream is to inspire, educate, and motivate people of all ages. I want my book to take off and become a motivational speaker
