Daily Inspiration: Meet Maribel García Acosta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maribel García Acosta.

Hi Maribel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Maribel García. I was born in the south of Spain. When I was a little girl, my mum always had the oven out of service. I never saw how it works or lived the experience of baking homemade cookies or a birthday cake. She always bought some desserts easy to make with the blender or something like that. Unfortunately, the oven was always a place to store the pans. When I went to study journalism abroad, I had the opportunity to have an oven in the kitchen that worked. And now the magic starts!!!For the first time, I baked a brownie and a lemon cake. Maybe weren’t perfect, but for me something special was created. I had the chance to try something new. I’d never known How you feel when you bake something and I loved this sensation.
I continued to prove more american and spanish recipes while I was studying in the university. Traditional cakes at the beginning and some years later, I try to do new recipes and watch a lot of cooking TV Shows and programs, I bought cookbooks as well. I didn’t realize it but I was studying baking.
When I was doing some recipes I created a blog with the objective to collect my recipes and not forget them. Now my blog Fresas Con Chocolate has more than 10 years and almost 400 recipes. The time passes so fast but I’m so proud to continue with this project.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s always some struggle on the way. In 2013 I went to Scotland. I lived in Edinburgh for three years. I started working in a bakery and it was a nice experience at the beginning, but the owner decided to have more trial people from a school bakery in France and I was fired. I learnt a lot about french pastries like croissants or pain au chocolate but at that moment I was in another country and without a work. Finally I got some job in a Grassmarket Hotel and continued watching tv and practicing english and french recipes. Was a special time of my life because I felt more mature and I lived in the UK culture.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a journalist and I love to write articles on my blog. I love to explain the origins of the recipe and give to my readers some interesting information while they are reading the article. It’s non only a recipe. Sometimes it’s literature with a recipe, flowers in my pictures, I love to create my own world. My unique and own world. My blog saves me when I feel sad or I had some problem this years. It’s always there. It has been my open window to the world.

I would love to write in a magazine about bakery or food in general. It’s my dream and I’m working hard to have an opportunity, I would bring the spirit of my blog, Fresas con Chocolate, to a magazine or newspaper with my articles and recipes. At this moment, I’m studying photography because I discovered a nice way of expressing how I see my recipes and how to transmit them. If I get people to enjoy reading my article, I will have achieved my goal.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I speak Italian as well. I lived in Florence for some time when I was in my twenties and it was the most beautiful experience of my life. Art & gastronomy is always a nice combination. I’m in love with Italian culture and you can find a lot of recipes from this country on my blog. Torta Paradiso, Cantuccini or Cannoli are my favourites and it’s a pleasure to write about the history of these desserts.
