Today we’d like to introduce you to Lite Bulb.
Lite, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my journey in the Chicago dance community, starting with a local troupe called Alpha and Omega, and then moving on to Third Dimension, originally known as The Empire. Eventually, I joined my first battle group, Terra Squad, and competed throughout the city, building the reputation I have today. After about five to seven years of this, I was invited to go overseas with DJs Spinn and Rashad. This opportunity alongside a few others launched my career to a professional level during the Planet Mu tour around this time period.
While on this tour, I realized that the music was evolving in a different direction than the dance form itself. This insight motivated me to create a group with my best friends back in Chicago. Our goal was to elevate the dance scene and support the community. Over the past decade, we have engaged in various forms of art, including music, dance, fashion, and performance. We have performed at different venues, curated various events, taught workshops, and organized camps for the youth in Chicago, all aimed at pushing the community and the art form to new heights.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been a steady build, like a slow ride on a roller coaster. I’ve faced many struggles in finding ways to make ends meet. At the same time, I’ve also sought to represent what it means to be a dancer at a high level and to ensure that dance is not sidelined or regarded as less important than professions like rapping, basketball, law, or other art forms. One of my primary struggles has been to change the perspective and stigma attached to dance. As an artist, early on, I strived to make a living and be seen and respected for my craft and paid as such.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Chicago Footwork artist specializing in footwork dance, music, art, and producing various events, productions, and media content. What sets me apart from others is my deep authenticity in the form I have learned from the originator of the culture. This authenticity is reflected consistently in all of my work, whether performing, creating music, developing a new dance piece, or teaching others the genuine version of the dance. I’m most proud of the development of my company, LB PRODUCTIONS, and the upcoming dance/ art exhibition, “New Ghost,” which is my life’s work coming to fruition this year in June at Hairpin Arts Center.
Any big plans?
I’m anticipating my upcoming art exhibition, which will showcase a variety of my latest works and explore themes of our culture. Touring this project will allow me to engage with audiences and share the creative process behind my pieces.
Additionally, I am excited about the upcoming music releases and shows from The Era Footwork Collective this year. We have some incredible tracks lined up that reflect our growth as artists and the evolution of footwork music. I look forward to performing alongside my talented peers and celebrating our unique sound and energy during live shows.
Moreover, we have been working on several fashion collaborations to blend our musical style with fresh, innovative designs. These projects highlight our artistic vision and create a dynamic experience transcending music alone. Many thrilling developments are on the horizon for the collective this year!
