Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Patterson.
Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t start in real estate the traditional way. I started by buying and restoring an old house in college with a small inheritance—and I was hooked immediately. I grew up in a historic home, so I think it was always in me. I’ve always loved the history, the architecture, and the process of bringing something back to life.
While people my age were out enjoying nightlife and partying and the things that college kids did, I was home stripping paint, pulling wallpaper, and figuring out how these old houses were built. I would buy a property, renovate it, live in it for a couple of years, then sell it and move on to the next. Over time, I was able to keep one as a rental, then another, and slowly built a portfolio.
Eventually, I left a job I wasn’t passionate about and got my real estate license. That’s when everything really came together. I continued restoring homes—I’ve now restored 38 historic properties that I’ve personally lived in. My clients always ask me about it, and I tell them the newest house I’ve ever owned is 1873 and the oldest is 1777. I act as my own general contractor, managing everything from hiring subcontractors to ordering materials and working with the Board of Architectural Review when needed. It’s hands-on, detailed work, and it’s given me a level of knowledge you just can’t get any other way.
Today, I’m a top-producing agent in Charleston and nationally ranked, working across the peninsula, the beaches, and the surrounding areas. What really sets me apart is that I don’t just sell historic homes—I understand them. I’ve lived the process, made the decisions, solved the problems, and that perspective completely changes how I guide my clients, whether they’re buying or selling.
I don’t just help people buy homes in Charleston—I help them build a life here, and most of the time, I gain a friendship along the way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not always been a smooth road.
In the beginning, contractors didn’t take me seriously. A redhead showing up in designer clothes and heels wasn’t what they were used to. But it didn’t take long for them to realize I knew exactly what I was doing. Over time, that shifted—now many contractors call me to walk their projects and ask for my input.
Breaking into luxury real estate was another challenge. I was young and new, and clients had to be willing to take a chance on me. What they found was that I knew my craft, I worked hard, and I approached things differently. I was hands-on, detail-oriented, and brought a level of insight that wasn’t always typical.
I also had to earn the respect of other agents. There were people in the business for years who didn’t believe I had real clients at higher price points. That meant I had to prove myself again—by working harder, staying consistent, and building relationships one deal at a time. Today, many of those relationships are some of my strongest. We share information, collaborate when it makes sense, and genuinely support each other.
Some of my very first clients are still with me today—and now I’m working with their children. That’s something I’m incredibly proud of.
It wasn’t easy, but I built my career through hard work, thinking differently, being available when others weren’t, and giving honest advice—even when it wasn’t what someone wanted to hear.
In this business, your reputation isn’t built overnight—it’s earned over time, one decision and one relationship at a time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is that I don’t just sell homes—I’ve lived this business from the inside out.
Over the years, I’ve restored 38 historic properties that I’ve personally lived in, acting as my own general contractor on each one. I’ve hired the subcontractors, sourced the materials, managed every detail, and worked through the Board of Architectural Review when needed. The newest home I’ve ever owned is 1873 and the oldest is 1777. That experience gives me a level of understanding of historic properties that simply can’t be taught.
I’ve been in real estate for over 40 years and consistently rank in the top 1% of agents in Charleston, as well as among the top agents in the state and nationally. I work across the entire Charleston market—the peninsula, the beaches, and all the surrounding islands and neighborhoods—but my passion has always been historic homes. They require a different level of knowledge, and that’s where I bring the most value.
When I work with clients, it’s never just about the house—it’s about how they want to live. I’m very hands-on, I stay involved in every detail, and I’m always accessible when my clients need me. I’m also very direct. I don’t tell people what they want to hear—I tell them what they need to know to make the right decision, even if it’s the harder conversation. That level of honesty is what builds trust, and it’s why my clients rely on me.
Over time, those relationships become something more. Many of my clients have been with me for decades, and now I’m working with their children. That kind of continuity doesn’t happen by chance—it comes from trust, consistency, and truly understanding people.
I don’t just help people buy and sell homes—I help them find where they want to live, how they want to live, and in the process, those relationships often last a lifetime.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The best way to work with me is simply to reach out. I work with both buyers and sellers throughout Charleston, South Carolina—from the historic peninsula to the beaches and surrounding islands—and I’m always open to having a thoughtful conversation about what someone is looking to do.
A large part of my business is built on referrals, particularly from agents across the country. Those relationships are important to me, and I take them seriously. When someone entrusts me with their client in Charleston, South Carolina, they know that client will be guided with a high level of care, discretion, and attention to detail from beginning to end.
I’m also always open to collaborating with other professionals—agents, designers, and those who value quality and understand the nuances of this market. Charleston, South Carolina is very much a relationship-driven place, and the best outcomes often come from working together.
At the end of the day, the people who work with me are looking for more than a transaction. They want guidance, honesty, and someone who is fully invested in the process. That’s how I’ve built my business, and it’s why so many of my clients return over the years and refer me to the people they care about.
