Daily Inspiration: Meet Ivana Desancic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivana Desancic.

Hi Ivana, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I knew I wanted to be a photographer since I was about ten years old, but coming from Bosnia and Herzegovina which is a country that offers very little opportunity to young people, I was never able to afford a camera in order to start working on my dream. After I moved to US in 2016, got my green card, and started working, I got my first beginner camera by the end of 2017. I started learning everything I could about shooting and editing.

In 2019, I upgraded to a professional camera and I was finally ready to start creating. After only five months, I got my first award from Adobe as a Top Talent Photographer 2019, which kickstarted my career.

Today, I am a self-employed fine art photographer that has been exhibited in US and Europe, published internationally in several magazines, and won about 10 different awards.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As mentioned earlier, coming from a different country where I could not afford to follow my dreams meant that I got a late start on my career. I had to start my whole life from scratch while trying to create a business as a woman and an immigrant. No matter what obstacles get in my way, I am aware that it comes with owning a business, and no obstacle will make me stop working on growing my skills and my business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a fine art photographer and Photoshop artist. Through surrealism and fantasy elements, my work focuses on human connection with nature. I am known for using mythological creatures as my main subjects (fairies, elves, nymphs, mermaids…) which to me represent nature in human form. With this approach, I am hoping to raise awareness and get people to be more interested in respecting nature and all of its living things.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I am driven by my will to always learn and practice new skills. My imagination and creativity provide me with endless ideas to explore.
