Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Marion
Hi Elizabeth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a pianist, singer and online piano teacher. I perform regularly at nursing homes, wineries and resorts. When I was in college my piano professor recommended that I perform at nursing homes to prepare me for my juries and recitals. Funny enough we were always at odds and disagreed on a lot of things. I was really stubborn and busy but for some reason I took his advice. I fell in love with playing for seniors and continued doing it after college.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not haha. Right before the pandemic I launched a new part of my nursing home entertainment business. I played piano, sang and then brought my collection of world instruments for people to touch and explore. It was amazing. People who were incoherent and unstable were totally engaged and asking questions by the end of the program. Doing the music portion first seemed to relax them and allow them to be more social. I saw a decrease in call outs and misbehavior. Then the pandemic hit. I had just found an amazing niche and a way to get more bookings and everything shut down. I’ve had to go in and out of working jobs to support myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in playing wholesome nostalgic music from the 50’s to the 70’s. I’m most proud of spending years researching classic billboard hits and playing them in a way that is authentic, true to the original sound and melodic. I’m also proud of researching spirituals and folk music that older people remember from their day. My show also includes other genres like classical, jazz and gospel. I know that even though people may look alike, they may have completely different interests. When I perform I want everyone to hear something they love at least once.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important thing I’ve learned is to get started before you think you are ready. I always had a delay tactic or excuse or an idea of what my show should be before I started performing. My brother who is also a professional musician told me to just get started anyway. That it would never be perfect and that I should learn along the way, embarrass myself and keep going.
